Though I'm out of the stage of compartmentalizing my "sacred" and "secular" life, I have this question...

When Christian musicians cover a secular song, does it become a Christian song then?

In general, no.

When a secular song is song, the secular meaning and intention of the song often remains. Sometimes, the song may have a Christian message, but great caution and should be used.to ensure that the message portrayed to the public is indeed the Christian one, and not the secular one. It can be difficult to do this properly, so therefore many responsible musicians choose not to try to go down that road.

I think you are a bit too hung up on categories. What, for instance, do you call a "Christian artist"? Would you classify Bruce Springsteen, who is a known Catholic? Or Bob Dylan, who famously converted to Christianity years ago? Lady Gaga is a Catholic, for what its worth, despite her flamboyant lifestyle. The category of "Contemporary Christian" puts out a lot of crap, musically speaking. When I want to hear music about the faith, I turn to the old classics, everything from Southern spirituals to Gregorian chants. Some of the Southern great gospel music has been done by Elvis Presley and others who are not considered "Christian Artists" by your standards. Short answer, Let them rock! If they have the talent for it, I say go for it.

no, a secular song is a secular song...it's the song that matters, not the artist performing the song
