one of my stoner friends is just a bit paranoid so he used several card bord boxes to build a " panic room " by sealing off a small portion of his bedroom then wallpapering the boxes. problem solved?

If possible get some professional help, solve the problem when it is small, or when he grow up, with Fear as a Guiding light, it is a terrible way to live.
Trust need to be establish, Trust means keeping Promises, no matter big or small, Takes alot of time. Once he start forgiving some of the Promise not Kept, you will already have won him over.
Saving Soul is one of the Best thing a Human can do, irregardless of religion.
We don't "Save" people, by talks, or books, but by our deeds and actions. yes it is much tougher, but this wins their hearts and minds.

Just because a person is paranoid does not mean someone is not out to get them. Your friend sounds a bit extreme,and in some need of proffisional help,in coming togrips with what is happening to him:
He may be one of us who has a chemical imbalance to the brain. Mine was caused by anti seizure medication I was put on to control epileptic seizure's: Thankfully there are medications that are able to completely remove all of the symptoms that I was having of the clinical depression.
