im trying to get involved in kenjutsu and really want to teach myself as much as is possible as well as learn from others.

I don't think I would seriously take any cues from television or movies...scripted, choreographed sword fights have little to do with the real deal...which is what kenJUTSU (sword techniques) is all about as compared to ken DO (way of the sword)...not knocking kendo, however...
There are some very good videos and books out there which outline the basics of sword techniques, beginning with proper grip and foot work and basic cutting strokes.

Watch what they do in TV and Movie sword-fights very closely and copy the foot and hand movements with a training sword.
