I would believe that the trogan war was a great battle, as far as original battle strategies. It depends on what you mean but "the greatest military battle." because there has been battle faught over time that you would even consider a battle. I believe that the best battle are faught before you even got to physical war. So you will not see these battles in history books.

Sun Tzu in the art of war says "Therefore, to gain a hundred victories in a hundred battles is not the highest excellence; to subjugate the enemy's army without doing battle is the highest of excellence.

Therefore, the best warfare strategy is to attack the enemy's plans, next is to attack alliances, next is to attack the army, and the worst is to attack a walled city. ?

Laying siege to a city is only done when other options are not available.

During WWI we could only control certain sizes of engagements with our communications ability & technology, so it's hard to believe, but... Based on shear numbers engaged simultaneosly under single comanders, and the net effect on the western world, I'd say the engagement between Aetius/Theodoric & Atilla at Orlean (his first defeat) & the decisive pursuing engagement at the Battle of Chalons. The roman empire fell anyway, but w/o this victory there would be no Christianity & the western (Europe) world would have been divorced from teh Roman tradition in its culture & development. The world has never changed so much or risked such change in any single engagement, and never has there been (to my knowledge) such a large single engagement.

notice the question says battle, not war, there is a big difference, i think the greatest battle of all times was operation overlord, when the allies invaded normandy to take back france from germany. 18 and 19 year old kids never even reached the beach or never hit the ground on their parachutes, died. now france dont even want to help us in the war against terrorism but if you visit normandy, or even watch the movie, saving private ryan, you will see the price the allies paid and now, even after the WTC was attacked, france gave NO help. im a former marine, i been to france, i regret being there
