Take the tires, and tire rods off, disconnect the 2 power steering lines, unhook the exhaust at the back of the y, remove the 2 rear bolts of the subframe and let it come down about a foot, remove 2 bolts holding the rack, then remove the rack and pinion. Don't forget first to disconnect the battery, and steering shaft inside the car.

Yes its hard. I am a Ford tech and am here to say it takes some doing to tackle a job like this. You have to lower the rear subframe to remove the rack and pinon. It takes some effort to do and needs to be done on a car hoist.

A remanufactured 1996 Ford Taurus rack and pinion unit costs about $155. Here is a photo: http://www.rockauto.com/ref/Cardone/Detail.html?22232.jpg

On a Ford?
Just drive over some pot holes.
It'll just fall off. I had a ford and everything made noise on it except the horn.
