If you see a stranger approaching from a long way away at what distance do you say hello or initiate contact?

That is, if you do say howdy to strangers. I often experience an awkward distance / timing thing even if it turns out to be a friendly person. I was wondering if others did.

When you have full eye contact with that person.

I say hello when they are just a couple of steps away. I sometimes greet strangers if they seem friendly and I'm walking somewhere where there's not that many people.

I don't generally talk to strangers. You have no obligation to do so and, honestly, if you stress about it that much, you probably just need to chill out and start worrying more about yourself. That stranger does not give a damn about your little gesture of friendliness, so you shouldn't waste your time.

Acknowledge them if you wish within 10 feet. A nod, howdy, hi. If they enter your personal zone - 6 feet - how's it going? Nasty (nice) weather, eh? The if you wish to carry it further - 3 feet - the contact zone. Shake hands, stop and chat "I like that T shirt man!, or one girl admiring another girl's hair. The list can go on.

When strangers approach me, I generally start walking very fast away from them. I don't trust too many of those strangers.

I usually smile and if we make eye contact I say Hi or hello, or good evening

i tend to say hello when they almost reach me so they have time to say hello if they fell like it. im also a very friendly person

No it's not safe you never know. If they start a conversation just talk back but don't carry it on. Unless you like them lol

I usually just glance up and smile until they're close enough to hear me say 'hi'.
