During the Spring, in my shack where I write my manifestos, I had birds living in my dryer vent for awhile. I put hardware cloth over the vent to keep them out. My question is would you rather have your house burn down from the dryer overheating or would you like to live at peace with the birds?

Hardware cloth IS a wire screen with rather larger openings. So far no one has answered the question.

Also, I should have added this but I already bought the louvered flap vents for the thing. It's ok though because my house burned down so it doesn't matter. The birds are picking at the food that spilled out from the fridge.

Why don't you keep them out of the vent with some screen or wire?

first, you shouldn't use anything wire as this could hurt the birds that are trying to get out of the vent. Next, there are attachments for the outside of the house where the vent comes out that has a small flap (door) that opens when the dryer is on, the dryer vents out but the birds don't come in, not expensive at all and worth looking into. you can find it at any home depot or lowes store. I would suggest getting this and then you and the birds will all be happy.
go to : http://www.homedepot.com and put in vents in the search box at the top, then go to page 3 and you can see what I mean. or click on the link below and you will find it there as well. good luck.

you should be able to find some wire screen that had fairly large size holes but that birds couldn't get into. why not put some birdhouses outside by the vent as an alternative for them. you wouldn't want them to die in your dryer hose either.

Put some wire screen on there, it will keep other unwanted guests out too, like mice and rats
