If your cat is doing it consistantly and really going after its tail, I suspect it was separated from its mother too soon. Cats that are separated from mom at too young of an age often have psychological issues and attach their tails. HOWEVER, there could also be a hormone deficiency that causes the skin to itch and the cat to really lay into it' s tail, as well. The simple solution to that is hormone shots, which are relatively inexpensive. Consult your vet. He/she can run a CBC (complete blood count) to be sure.

Okay, first of all cats don't fight with their tail. They do play with it because the cats sees it moving and will playfully attack it. Now when you say your cat bit off its tail, do you mean the entire tail or the tip or the hair etc. I have never heard of a cat actually biting off their entire tail. Maybe chewing the tip or chewing all the hair off, but not the tail itself. Cats will continually chew on thier tails if they have a skin condition such as exzema, psoriasis, ring worm or mange. If the cat is long haired, they might have mats that are painful and they are trying to chew them off. There is also a possibility of flea bits that itch so bad they chew themselves up. Whatever the reason, you definately need to get your cat to the vet asap. If their is any infection or open wounds, the cats life could be in danger. Please take it to the vet now. Shahin

That is the first time I heard that! Your cat has issues. Usually a cat chases or plays with it's tail like a built in toy. I hope your kitty is alright! That is sad.

1. Cats can and do chase their tails. If it's a young cat, he's probably playing.
2. If he BIT it hard and injured himself -- it's either that his tail was hurting him and he was trying to get away from that -- or he's having an anxiety fit of some sort and hurting himself. Playing is normal behavior -- hurting themselves is not. I advise you to get him to a vet ASAP if he's hurt himself. If he's just playing -- just enjoy the giggles you'll get from it.

i've had cats all my life... only one got a bit "aggressive" biting his tail.. it turned out he had some sort of infection or something under the skin that was causing him pain... that said i've seen 1 or 2 flat out crazy cats that were extremely aggressive... dangerously... i think a kid in the neighborhood gave them drugs... really.

It's just another fluffy cat toy to them. Just sit back and enjoy the craziness. At least your cat is getting exercise.

I didn't know that cats fought with their tails. Maybe your kitty was hungry or needs animal psichological help. Good Luck!
