FIV in kittens is not common. If they test positive for it, usually they have gotten it from the mother. I really think you are talking about FIP. That is common to a litter and the litter mates would most likely have it to. I am just not sure which disease you are talking about.
A kitten would not get FIV from the shelter. They get it from a deep bite would and then it take a bit before they test positive. So I am really not to sure you are talking about FIV.
FIV is NOT highly contagious!!!!!!! The cat needs to have a deep bite wound from an infected cat!!!! It is not spread like FeLV which is very contagious from cat to cat through things like saliva!!!!!!!!!!!

torbaynewfs is correct, FIV is not highly contagious, nor is it picked up by close contact with other cats. It is transmitted thru bite wounds.
It is possible, but very rare for a kitten to contract FIV from the mother.

It is a virus and they can get it from other cats who have it.
It is not uncommon for them to come from a shelter with it. The test is not done at most shelters as they can not afford to tesst for everything.
I am sorry about your kitten. It is very hard to loose one to FIV.

Some kittens are born with FIV(similar to HIV, but for kitties). It's a virus and your kitty could've picked it up from another cat.

So very sorry you lost your kitty. I too lost one just 5 months ago to the feline leukemia disease.
Your kitty can contract the disease through many different ways. Through contact with other kitties, sharing food and water bowls, litter boxes, being born with it.
I would suggest if you are thinking of getting another kitty to have it tested,if it test negative then get the shots needed to prevent it.

I would agree that is probably where it came from. It is a highly contagious disease and when there are loys of other cats around, it is easy for them to catch it.

That is highly likely. It is contagious from cat to cat, and cats at the pound could easily have it.

Sometimes, they are born with it, because their mother had it.
