crate the animal. And don't cave when it barks. The best place for a crate is the room you spend the most time in, OR if you will only crate at night, put the crate in your room and get some ear plugs. After a few days, the dog will understand that the crate is his special place, his den, and he won't complain about it.
I have successfully crate trained all sorts of dogs, it's NOT cruel and don't use it for punishment, and they will be fine.
But EVERY TIME you react to the barking, you encourage it. Even if you call the dog's name, you are encouraging it. YOu have to ignore it completely and the dog will give it up.

I recommend a child's Pack and Play. This is similar to a play pen. Put the Pack and Play in your bedroom. Provide the puppy a warm place to sleep. For that size dog I suggest a soft covered pet bed. You can line the Pack and Play with paper or with the training pads for dogs. Take your puppy out to pee prior to going to bed. Do not feed or water your puppy before going to bed. It will take some time, but you can do it.

Confine him in a small crate--just big enough for him to turn around in. Keep the crate near your bed at night so he doesn't feel alone. They are pack animals so isolating them is wrong. He will whimper--you can calmly reassure him but whatever you do, DON'T put him on your bed, don't take him out of the crate unless to potty. Otherwise, he will NEVER learn. Once he's potty trained, then he can share your bed if that's what you want--but I wouldn't try it until he's around a year old.

stop giving him water two hours before bed, take him out to pee before bed, take one of your old t-shirts, not fresh washed and put it into a crate, or pen, and a toy or two, and some patience for you. The dog knows that if it wines, barks your going to get it and that is now the pattern. I have used the same process, except that I had the dog in a seperate room, cause it was breaking my heart to hear him cry, but after four days he was adjusted..

Since your pup is a small breed take him out before you go to bed. Keep him in a crate or confined in a small area with a baby gate. Although he may cry and whimper IGNORE him- you are rewarding the behavior! If you stop responding to the crying he will figure out that it is sleep time.
When you take your pup outside be sure to praise him for going outside by telling him "good Outside!!!" He'll get the drift.

this is what takes position once you've a domestic dog! you should assume some sleepless nights. by you allowing her to sleep on your mattress, you're in straight forward words including to the problem. you're practise her that if she whines, she receives to sleep with you - she will be in a position to not in any respect stumble on the fashion to love her crate. At nighttime, conceal her crate with a blanket, and go away a ticking clock both in there including her, or proper beside her crate. in the course of the day, go away the crate door open and placed a toy or Kong packed with candies in there - feed her in her crate also - this would help to associate the crate with something effective.

I think the best thing you can do is learn to live with your dog barking and crying when you confine it at night. After a while it will learn that doing that gets it nowhere and it will stop.

Puppies are just like babies, so he'll prolly keep this up till he is about 4 or 5 months old. Just don't give in. Leave him in his pen, but keep him so that he can see you. I've also heard leaving a radio on or some sort of backround noise helps a new pup to calm down.

Buy a dog crate ignore his whines and barks he will learn that gets attention and will continue to do it. For my puppies I always put a wind up alarm clock under the blanket in the cage it imitated their mothers heart beat it always worked for me and play with him before bed to tire him out.

I used to put my pups in a small cardboard box lined with old towel. A jug of warm water and a ticking, wind up alarm clock. They would sleep thru the night most of the time.
