I just read that sanitizer must at the very minimum, contain 60% alcohol in order to even be effective. However I've never seen anything with more than 62%, almost everthing is 60%. Can you just add your own ethyl or isopropyl to a bottle of sanitizer?

i refill trial size sanitizer bottles with rubbing alcohol for trips, purse, etc...to clean public toilets before using, hands, it actually dries faster than the store bought gel stuff, alot of people in the medical field use it straight as well. its alot cheaper than the gels. it does seem to dry you out more, tho' . if you have a favorite lotion that you use anyway i say go for it!!!

I hope we are talking about topical or external sanitizers, right? You're not ingesting or using this as mouthwash, eyewash or contact lens cleaner, right? For these applications, leave the commercial or prescription levels alone.

That said....

If the sanitizer is already alcohol based, then yes you can add more.

However, how much more effective do you need if things are dead, or at the least dislodged and down the drain?

Sanitizers come in many types. Chlorine based sanitizers are very effective without any alcohol (and shouldn't be mixxed anyway). A mere 12ppm of iodine is a contact sanitizer, and very effective as long as it is fresh.

no, what is in there will give you about all the sanitation you can expect to get from an alcohol containing product

Most contain alcohol but what I do is buy the green/mint rubbing alcohol, put it in a spray bottle and use it for my counter tops. It disinfects and smells good!

if it has 60% then isn't it effective? I wouldn't add any more because chemical quantities can be just as deadly as mixing chemicals in general

Sure, I just use straight isopropyl and thats still only 70%.

I think the best sanitizer of all, correct me if I'm wrong, please; is ordinary Clorox provided it has chlorine in it.
