This question is best considered separately for Japan and for Germany.
1. Japan, which was historically a militaristic society, wished to develop economically to a status similar to that of the Western powers. However, as an island state Japan has very few natural resources. It is notably lacking in oil, but more generally it has to import raw materials such as metallic ores. Therefore Japan wished to conquer territory in South East Asia to control resources. This initailly brought Japan into conflict with China, an ancient enemy, and then Dutch, English and American possesions in the Far East.
2. The war in Europe resulted from Germany's agressive actions. In part it had economic causes: Germany had punitive financial conditions imposed upon it by the Versilles Treaty which end the First World War in 1919. France in particular pressed for these conditions, but the Treaty was the joint responsibility of all the allied powers. The main ones, which formed a sort of inner cabinet that actually agreed the Treaty, were the United States, France, United KIngdom and Italy: there were also various minor players such as Greece. The consequences of the Versailles Treaty were made worse by international economic decisions that resulted in massive unemployment in the developed world continuously between 1919 and 1939. Hitler was the only leader to address this, by expanding his arms industries, but this led to War becuase the output was geared to foreign agression and because without War Germany's credit would have run out. Another problem which encouraged war was that the First World War was not fought on German soil, but French, and a myth developed in Germany as a result that their country had been treated as the loser when they had not really been defeated.
The above describes the causes of the Second World War in general terms, but at another level Hitler was hugely responsible as an individual. He whipped up military feeling and hostility towards foreign nations and races as a means, in the early days of his rule, of courting political popularlity.
Technically, England and France declared war on Germany in 1939 over the invasion of Poland. It is arguable that more competent politicans between the wars in these two countries would have stopped Hitler without a major War, e.g. by calling Hitler's bluff when he entered the Rhineland in 1936.
Culpability for the Second World War in Europe is now really a historical question. The countries and people today who threaten world peace are quite different from those whose evils caused the Second World War.

Controversial.
Many could say that it was quite simply the Germans invading Poland.
Many could go back a few years and blame the Treaty of Versailles for causing massive inflation in Germany and thus allowing many groups including the NSDAP and SA to exert influence.
However, the Treaty of Versailles was a result of the First World War, so you could therefore say that the as WWI was caused by the "Black Hand" in Serbia, as they were (though highly indirectly) the cause of the Second World War.
Therefore Slavic-Nationalism caused the deaths of around 99 million individuals.
See? told you it was controversial
Note: although Muslims are the cause of many problems today, Gavrilo Princip was not a muslim.
Edit: Oooh yes of course everything on tv is true. Search for "Mlada Bosna" and Colonel Dragutin Dimitrievitch and dont forget Nedjelko Cabrinovic.

Well, Germany invading Poland in 9/39 was probably the catalyst for the war in Europe. When Japan and Germany decided to team up, Germany invaded Russia in Jun 1941, so Russia joined the party. and Japan attacked the US in Dec 7th 1941 and Germany declaring war on the US on Dec 11th 1941 brought the US directly into the mix. So my answer from an American stand point would have to be Adolph Hitler and Emperor Hirohito.

history isn't a lot of individual chapters in a book. to quote Lenin, "everything is connected to everything else", hitler didnt start the second world war, he just played a major part in it, most english people will answer your question by saying hitler invaded poland, americans might quote perl harbour, these are things that forced the issue of taking sides in this conflict, but in reality events can be traced back to the first world war and beyond, and then your question becomes who caused the first world war, then you can extrapolate back even further still, as far as you want to really, as for what countries are the main enemies of the world, thats like saying which US state is the main enemy of america. surely thats an impossible question to answer,

alot of it depends on when the person asking the question(if it is your homework-lol) believes it started, the JAPS invaded CHINA as early as 1931,8 years prior to Hitler's invasion of Poland and a full 10 yrs prior to Pearl Harbor. So a good case could be made for the Japs, some believe the Spanish civil war was the beggining so GEN. Fransisco Franco (who as any SNL fan knows is STILL DEAD-lol) could be blamed, but the 4th-6th grade history answer you are looking for is good ole Adolph Hitler and Uncle Joseph Stalin. These two caused about 40 million deaths world wide between them!

Economics was the primary cause of WWII.
The world was suffering from a world wide depression caused by international financiers. And, their activities caused governments to resort to war to restore their economies.
Which provided even more wealth to those who caused it in the first place.
But don't use that as your homework answer or you will get a "F."

The Germans were forced to take the blame for the First World War, which was very damaging to their national pride as well as their economy, since they were stuck with the bill for most of the reparations for it. Hitler gave them their pride of nation back; apparently he was quite charismatic as well, and people were more than happy to follow his leadership.
