I agree with a previous poster on your previous question....keep asking questions, you'll eventually find the truth....otherwise,

Ever heard "Thou dost protest too much?"

It's called free will. You can choose to receive the free gift of salvation that Christ died to give you, or not. God is merciful and long-suffering, that's why Christ has not yet returned. He's still giving you another chance to see the Truth. He loves you whether or not you believe in Him. He desires that all be saved. It is your choice. If you don't go to heaven, it because you chose not to. It's really that simple. If you truly are searching, pick up the Word (Holy Bible) and start with the Book of John in the New Testament. Ask Him. If you're sincere, you'll find the Truth.

Take your question to your intended conclusion: "If God knows what I'll choose, and if he effectively 'made' me choose it, then I'm definitely going to heaven. If i'm going to heaven and there is no way for me NOT to go to heaven, why not just put me in heaven now? If God knows what I'm going to do and knows it'll damn me to hell, why not just put me in hell?"

In any case, the religious claim is that God knows what we are going to do, but because of "free will" he is powerless to stop us. That leads to other problems, namely "God is Powerless???" The answer to that issue is that God is not actually powerless, but chooses not to interfere to allow free will. The issue raised by that belief is: God is a jerk who puts some of us on a path to damnation?? The answer to that issue is -- Yes. Now, if you allow for the possibility that God does not know the course of nature, then maybe he puts us through the "charade" of life to allow the natural world to make whatever changes it may make, which in turn will impact future human's lives in ways he couldn't have forseen. However, I find that argument pretty unconvincing, because it puts far too many constraints on God.

but hell, what do i know, i'm just an atheist who studies christianity.

Why the charade of life if you are here by accident, your life has no meaning, and one day it will be completely done and over with like you never existed to begin with?

It's really more a case of if you take the road on the left He knows this will happen, chose the road on the right and He knows this will happen.
He will try to direct you but the choice remains yours.

Him knowing doesn't take away from a power to choose nor from the experience of life. It is about us growing up, not him.

People who believe that life is predetermined are afraid of facing a truly random future.

YOU ARE MISINFORMED GOD IS ALL KNOWING EXCEPT THE CHOICES A PERSON WILL MAKE. ITS CALLED FREE WILL. THATS WHY GOD TOLD ABRAHAM TO KILL HIS SON, GOD KNEW ABRAHAM WAS A VERY GOOD MAN BUT GOD DID NOT KNOW IF ABRAHAM WOULD LISTEN AND OBEY UNCONDITIONALLY.
GEN.22:12 for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
SEE GOD DID NOT KNOW UNTIL ABRAHAM ALMOST KILLED HIS ONLY SON.

god wants us to make a choice!
he has given us a brain that has more things than we can understand!
he is hoping that we choose wisely!
