The steroid shot will work. I am a Vet.
Don't mess with any strange diets.
He will just suffer longer.

I had the same problem with one of my dogs. Try using LyTar shampoo. You can get at any vet's office. Use it 3 times a week for a while. Lather the shampoo up on your dog, and leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing. I wrap my dog up in a towel and hold him for the 15-20 minutes. After about 3 to 4 weeks, you can cut it down to 1 to 2 time a week. If you can't get any LyTar right away, Selsun Blue works too;it doesn't work as well as the LyTar. If it is really bad, have the vet give you some steroid pills in addition to using the LyTar.
Good Luck! I know it's terrible to watch you dog be so uncomfortable. The above treatment worked really well for my dog, so hopefully it will work for your baby too!

You can do a steroid shot, but that is just a temporary fix. Also, you do not want to be using that on a puppy long term. Maybe try a new vet. Try a different food, and treat with Advantage to make SURE it is not fleas. That is a simple cuse for a simple problem if that were it.
You could have to get allergy testing which is expensive, so exhaust all the simple fixes first!!!!!

My dog also had itchy skin when she was younger, since then I have found out that chicken was the problem. It sounds like an allergy, I would try changing diet, do it gradually, read the labels carefully, first try switching the meats, as meats might be the problem, some sites you can check out are Wellness, SolidGold, EaglePack, Dick Van Pattens.
I found that with the holistic brands, many had essential oils which helped to keep my dogs coat nice and shiney, and her skin didn't have that horrible itchiness.
You can also try adding fish oil, a tablesoon of regular yogurt, oatmeal baths, but it sounds like an allergy. If food is not the problem look to the environment the dog is in, perhaps the type of grass your dog plays on or something in your home, that can be harder to figure out, you have to go by trial and error, try different things, 10 months is very young, your dog might grow out of it.
Good luck

do not give your dog a steroid shot the puppy is to young and causes problems in the future. Try (if you havent already) oatmeal shampoo and conditioner for your vets office or pet store and let the conditioner sit on the puppy a little while before rinsing out also try different dog foods some agitate the skin and there is some made to help their skin.

well it could be allergies, mites, infection and a whole lot more. i would say try another vet if your unhappy for a second opinion. i would start your dog on revolution in case fleas or sarcoptic mange is the problem. at the dermatology clinic i know thats is the first thing they try on everybody is revolution. steriods will help the itch but not stop the problem so you need to find the root of the problem. try a hypoallergenic dog food and revolution first then go from there.

Steroid shots, maybe Benadryl (if the vet agrees) tablets, Relief spray for itching which you buy at the vets, a cool cloth held over the itching for a few minutes might cool it down.

I have an English Bulldog-she was constantly scratching, losing hair, which caused bleeding and sores
I tried everything-shots, soap, pills
about $1000's later I decided to change her food
I tried only chicken and rice-no
then Pork and rice-no
then I tried Salmon and rice--she stopped itching within a day
I would -before everything else
try feeding your dog canned salmon and white rice-for a week make sure you watch
If that doesnt work try chicken with white rice
maybe if that isnt good try deer-
Good Luck
its heartbreaking to see your baby going through that-with your hands tied

I suggest you switch him to a hypo-allergenic diet. Science Diet has several that may work for him. Also, bath him only in medicated shampoo FROM THE VET, and do so every week. Keep him on regular flea treatment as well. I have had that problem with my Pug. He ONLY eats Science Diet Senior Chicken dog food and now, he has no problems.

Are you feeding a quality pet food? Poor quality foods have corn & wheat as ingredients. Both can cause skin problems. Poor quality foods also contain by products. While by products don't really cause skin problems I don't really want to feed my dog cancerous tissue which can be in by products. Some of the best brands of pet food are: California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick. Good luck.
