The actual numbers were 34 dead and 173 wounded, or a total of 70% of the crew. The Liberty was our newest "Intelligence" ship. (clue) This investigation was squashed and deemed classified by the Johnson Administration 39 years ago. There are veteran groups out there today still trying to get satisfaction on this issue. So in answer to your question, essentially nothing was done except a whole lot of sweeping under the rug.

The US response was the White house issuing a statement that the perpetrators of the crime would be persecuted. I believe that a Democrat was in office at the time.
