is it true that 95% of engineers are men

and is it true that 90% of personals are posted by engineers

i know why engineers are such a rare breed: they rarely reproduce and that would explain the personals posting

Check the National Science Foundation stats at the link below as far as gender in engineering (race/ethnicity and other factors too). There is a lot of information to sift through, which is a pain.

The Society of Women Engineers has more focused figures, but only goes up to the year 2000. Check out the "number of employed engineers" graph; only around 10% women at year 2000, so your 90% male figure is right for that year. I would say that the percentage of women in engineering has certainly increased since that time.

From my engineering experience at Ohio State, I would agree with some of the other answers; chemical eng, med/bio eng, and industrial systems engineering seem to do pretty good with the women-to-men ratio. Computer science/eng and electrical/computer engineering seem to be sausage party majors at the moment.

90% of personals posted by engineers? I somehow doubt that.

I doubt that 90% of personals are posted by engineers. There just aren't that many engineers. There just aren't that many people that can pass engineering school. A rare breed actually.

So, no, not true.

Not sure about neither of this one.

As said by other answerers, there just aren't enough engineers out there. US produces 60,000 engineers a year. That is what ? 0.00002% of US population.

About girls, boys to girl ratio is very low, however girls are found in computer engineering and chemical engineering, there are growing number of girls in electrical engineering too.

1. Is probably true. I am an engineer (chemical)
2. I don't post personals (you wish).
