I think the answer is obvious, although it seems to me that most Americans don't agree. Once you get past poverty level, money doesn't really make you happier. It adds as many burdens as it lifts.

I've always enjoyed old sayings and this is one of my favorites.
Stop and think about it.
Draw a line down the center of a piece of notebook paper.
Now place an X on the left side.
The Grass is always Greener on the OTHER SIDE of the FENCE.
OK, move the x to the right side.
If the saying is true then where you were, the left side, is now greener.
Why is it that what we don't have always looks better than what we do have????

Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived aside from Jesus Christ, wrote a book of the Bible completely dedicated to the topic of working hard to gain everything you want. Money doesn't bring anyone happiness, noone really believes this, but people think that all the crap they can buy with money will bring them happiness.
In either count their wrong, Solomon sais there is nothing greater for a man than to eat drink and be satisfied with his toil under the sun. If you don't believe Solomon, note that the man had practically everything (vineyards, gardens, palaces, 300 wives + concubines).
Read Ecclesiastes, its a pretty short book of the Bible and its got some wisdom that EVERY AMERICAN needs to hear. We all kill ourselves to buy crap that we never have time to enjoy.
