I would prefer to buy a gently used late-model vehicle from a private owner who had initially planned on keeping it for a long time, but suddenly had to get rid of it for some unexpected reason (debt, relocation, etc). I would bring along a trusted mechanic to help me with the inspection, and I would offer a fair price, based on recently published guidelines. Both parties have a good chance at a fair deal because there is no dealer involved to jack up the price.

I like slightly used. One year old with 10,000 miles or so. Reason being, buying a new car is nice. It feels good to get a car first. But, as soon as you drive that car off the lot, it looses 20% of it's value. So you buy a brand new vehicle for $30,000 and you drive it home and want to sell it, you wont get more than $24,000 for it in most cases. So you want to be on the other side of that. Let someone buy a car, drive it for a year, and then buy the same car one year later with minimum miles on it, for a killer deal.

I buy new. Buy used and you're just buying what someone else didn't want anymore. A new car I know how well it's been maintained, because I'm maintaining it.
