A good home theater sound system is basically a hi-fi system. You should select it as if you were going to listen to music only. Hi-fi systems cost range from $500 to $50,000 (and more!). But if you are really interested in good sound, look to the well respected makers of HiFi: Speakers: Bose, Infinity, Martin Logan, Magnapan, etc. A/V Receivers: Denon, Yamaha, Technics, etc. Get a high-end audio/video magazine (The Perfect Vision, Widescreen Review) and check the reviews of sound system components. From my point of view, you can't get a good sound system (that qualifies as a HiFI) for less than $2,000 (including amp & speakers).

The pre-packaged systems are cheapest, but the poorest quality. It's better to select your components separately.

Depends on how much your willing to spend? Affordable systems around $500-$800, I would go with a Jamo system. I love them, and I install them. As an installer, I get to deal with many companies, and all the good and bad. Jamo gives me the least problems, has an awesom warranty (which is important) and sounds excellent. Obviously you can spend bigger, and get louder and stuff. Sony has some nicer middle to upper level stuff. Look at there ES line. It's nice. Also, Denon has some nice equipment. Parasound is another good company. I'd stay away from Yamaha, Pioneer, Aiwa, or anything cheap. Because you get what you pay for in home theater. Good luck, and I hope for the best that you get a system that will sound awesome, because I know what that is like and you'll love it.

Bose 3.2.1. is the best surround sound system??? lol
You've got to be kidding.

Until Bose learns how to steer sound waves like a car, directly into my ears, the 3.2.1. system is a bedroom or at best secondary room home theatre system. You cannot try to compare a 2.1 system against a 7.1 or even 5.1 system. The very best home surround systems would have to come from a system that physically places speakers around you.

THX HQ, dolby is crap!

if your talking about buying a system, get the bose 3.2.1 it has only 3 speakers and sounds better than the 7.1 surround systems!

That original "THX" clip that plays before the beginning of a movie.

Go check out the http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/index.php? for in-depth discussions about audio systems. If you're looking for "best", you better get your check book ready. Equipment above the Harman Kardon, B&W, Denon, Onkyo, etc. will have a hefty price tag.

If you have the money... the M-Design Eleganza system with Monster amplification and processing without a doubt trumps any other system anywhere on the market. (not including custom systems... nothing beats a custom system) WARNING! this system can run upwards of $80,000

Bose. You could also call Disney up. They actually certify home theater systems. Ask them what to use. My friend in Florida has a Disney certified system and it awesome!
