I've been an epileptic for 20 years and 95% of my fits are brought on by my emotions. Like if I get upset or to excited.
Without even knowing it & sub consciouslly I have blocked out all my emotions to protect myself from being ill so I could live a normal life. I haven't cried for nearly a year and if something upsets me I shrug it off and don't really know it has effected me until I am having a fit and chewing my tongue off later.
How do I get rid of this thick skin so I can feel something again.

Unfortunatly epileptics can't be hyponotised but thanx for the suggestion.
I still have the same amount of fits whether I have emotion or not. I just don't want to feel like an android anymore.

That sounds very difficult. I guess it is about getting the balance right - being able to feel strong emotions when you want to, but if possible, being in control of when and where in case you have a fit.

By the way, I am a therapist (working in UK) and over here, hypnotherapists charge far more than counsellors or therapists!!!!

In Uk you can usually get short term therapy (b around 8 sessions) free on NHS.

Also, if you really want therapy, isn't it worth the cost?

Although it can always be therapeutic to talk things through in confidence, it might be that all you need to do is talk things through with yourself. Give yourself permission to feel again - but don't go from one extreme to another. Take advantage of all the support you have with friends and family to help you through.

You might find it helpful to write or paint - that can release emotions in a safe way - you can feel in control.

Hope this is of some help.

While you're likely to get a billion suggestions from this site, and many of them probably good, you may want to talk to a psychologist about this one. For one thing, it would suck if somebody suggested something that worked too well and gave you a seizure! If they're primarily brought on emotionally, a skilled therapist may be able to help you find and diffuse the "trigger". Crying sucks, I'd start with laughter, that's more connected to my favorite emotions. Do you have any photographs of happy times?

I really think the only way to do it is with professional help. A psychologist or a psychiatrist. I would suggest a psychiatrist for you since you are an epileptic and they can prescribe medications that help with that and the anxiety you feel about showing emotion.

It's good that you want to open up again. It's a hard thing to do. I hope you can do it.

so 95% of the fits are caused by emotions, and you want to undo the way you have learned to cope with this.

I don't know how to advise, as undoing will bring back lots of fits, and leaving as it is means less fits but feelings are sort of numbed, which is the only way to keep the fits as little as possible.

that is difficult to call, are you prepared to go back to lots of fits which will allow you to have feelings agian.
or do you want to keep 95% of the fits at bay and have no feelings.

it's your choice, and only your choice, no one on the web can decide for you, even though lots of us would like to help, I don't see how anyone can.

I do hope however you manage to find a solution. and wish you well.
