AFAIK it doesn't hurt anyone, so no big deal here.

Speaking in tongues was started at Pentecost in 33 C.E. (or A.D.)
Read Acts 2:1-8 (from any authorized copy of the Bible)
1) There was a sound of a rushing breeze when they received the holy spirit.
2) They began to speak different tongues, or other languages, (not gibberish or yelling).
Jewish persons from all of these different countries were in Jerusalem to worship at the Temple and they had to be told about Jesus Christ, what he had taught and how he had fullfilled Bible prophecy. There weren't interpretors for all of these people, so God's holy spirit (or active force) gave his disciples the ability to speak all of the languages that were spoken by the crowd.
The Bible also says at 1Corinthians 13:1, 8-10-- If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, I have become a sounding [piece of] brass or a clashing cymbal.
Verse (8) "Love never fails. But whether there are [gifts of] prophesying, they will be done away with; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will be done away with. For we have partial knowledge and we prophesy partially; but when that which is complete arrives, that which is partial will be done away with".
In Bible times, early Christians had 'partial knowledge' and 'prophecied partially'. The Bible became 'that which is complete' when all of the books of the Christian Greek Scriptures (or New Testament) were finished in 98 C.E. (or A.D.)
The Bible today is translated in over 2000 languages or dialects.

The so called speaking in tongues is not the usless babblings of so called prayer but and act of God when He created the different tongues when the people of babbel tried to build a tower to get to where God was. so God caused confusion among the people and made them speak different tongues,( different languages) to confuse them so they could not finish the tower.
This so called different tounge of prayer is a joke. When the bible says that when someone speaks in tounges, He is referring to a different language that no other person can understand.from a foriegn country. Not babblings of no words that can't even be understood in any country.that people speak. Tongues is a foregin language. not rediculous babblings. A big misconception.

Speaking in tongues is taken out of context. When people supposedly feel the Spirit and start talking in gibberish, that's completely NOT Biblical.
When the diciples spoke in tongue, it meant this:
Let's say for example we hold a Bible meeting and we have Russians, Filipinos, Chinese and Greek. None of them speak English; only in their respective languages. Speaking in tongue means the Bible leader and/or speaker will speak in English but the Russians will hear it in their language, the Filipinos in Tagalog, the Chinese in Mandarin, and the Greek in their language. Make sense? The speaker is only speaking one language but the congregation is hearing it in their respective language, as if the leader was speaking that language alone.
This is what it means to speak in tongues.

I speak in tongues and it's awesome. I'm all about it.
On the other hand not everyone speaks in tongues. It is not a requirement for salvation, in fact it is not a requirement for anything. It is a spiritual gift. God gives us all kinds of gifts. Some will receive some gifts and others will receive different gifts. Everyone is different.
Read 1 Corinthians Chapter 12.

Speaking in tongues is real. I have the gift of tongues but there are false profits everywhere. If a person is truly baptized in the Holy Ghost, there will always be one who is gifted with the interpretation.

Tongues are for a sign to them that BELIEVE NOT; prophesying for them which believe (1 Cor.14:22 below).
God is not the author of confusion (1 Cor.14:33 below).
When the Scriptures (Acts 2:3-11) speak of “tongues”, “tongues” refers to “languages”
1 Cor.14:22 Wherefore tongues (languages – Acts 2:4, Acts 2:6) are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying [serveth] not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
1 Cor.14:33 For God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Glossalalia is the technical name for it. You can try doing a yahoo or wikipedia search for lots of info on it. I did a paper on it in college in the early 70s. It is not unique to A of G, though. Even Tibetan Buddhism has a state of "sound vibration-toning" that is similar to "speaking in tongues." Native American too, some Hinduism sects......
When I was going to this Catholic college in So CA in the 70s there was a large group of students and locals who would get together once a week to "speak in tongues" if Spirit would move them this way." One of the people was my roommmate. I went to watch this phenomenon once, but was not into it then, but I went as an observer, researcher.
Roommate seemed like a genuine person who was not into "games" or show, but I am sure that there are many who would "fake it" and try to make a show of themselves to draw attention to themselves.
There are many really strange and cool spiritual phenomena in many religious paths as one goes deeper into the "mystical" realms, but in this age of rascaldom, dishonesty, cheating, egomania, grandiosity, attention seeking and ignorance, I would predict that there might be a higher percent of "fakers-cheaters" than those who actually are in deep touch with the Holy Spirit. I might also think that during one session of it, that a person might even be mixing moments of real tongues and moments of "fabricated," as it is due to tapping into a specific states of consciousness-energetics, so if one can hold this "energetic space" or is given the ability to hold this consciousness steady, then it can genuinely happen. It requires a meditative space with brain waves slowed down to the alpha level (8-14 cps or Hz). Both alpha and theta brain waves are vibrations-trance states that are windows to altered states of consciousness and other dimensional spaces-phenomena.
The question is really what "the motives" of a person are in this experience. Does it take them closer to deeper relationship with the Lord or does it make a person have more megalomania and thus further away from their relationship with the Lord. Is it part of glorifying and serving Him more or is it to serve our own egos? Is it an energy-expereince one seeks for oneself or is that energy given to the person?

Speaking in tongues means speaking a different language, a real language, not a bunch of gibberish. That so annoys me, these people that start speaking a bunch of nonsense and convince themselves they're speaking in tongue!

It like most worship, fall in three catogories. Divinely manifest, expression of worship or showing off.
The first the bible say will be accompanied by an intrepreter. The second is like bowing your head or raising your hands, if it helps you focus on God and set yourself aside it is ok. THe third needs to be discouraged. If anyone is going to show off in church it better be God showing off.
God hates it when someone tries to upstage him.

speaking in tongues is unedifying. one time that it was used in a edifying way was the day of pentecost. what good is it to speak in a different language in front of a church when they have no idea what your saying? how does that teach anyone anything? So, if you want to speak in tongues, get a translator, for edifying purposes
