Can you say rude? You shouldn't answer a cell phone in front of anybody, bosses, supervisors, friends or family, because it's just plain rude to let a phone call interrupt a conversation.

Cell phone usage at the work place is quickly becoming a source of annoyance, many employers have recently begin asking employees to keep their cell phones on vibrate in the work place. Keep your cell phone on vibrate, if it rings, either pick up the phone and go outside to answer it, or let it go to voicemail. If it's important, they'll call back. You can also text message the person to find out what they're calling about.

It depends on a lot of things... what you were doing at the time, what your boss was doing, what company policy is, what the office environment is like, etc. I think the circumstances of the call are also a HUGE factor.
I answered my cell phone this morning while working WITH my boss on some financials. I apologized to her but told her I wanted to check and see if it was my mother who had surgery yesterday. Sure enough it was, and my boss was not only okay with the quick conversation I had with my Mom, but she wanted the phone for a second to with my Mom a speedy recovery. (They have never met.)

I have only ever answered my cell phone in front of my boss when he knew that I was expecting an urgent business-related call on it. Other than that, I might look at the caller-ID screen in front of my boss to confirm that it's not an emergency, but I would not answer it.

Only if it is a business associate or client from that job. Don't answer private cell phone calls in front of your boss. That would look unprofessional and your boss will remember.

No, I would not answer my cell in front of my boss. I wouldn't even have it turned on. Shut it off and let the voice mail pick up your message. Then at the first available moment I would slip away and listen to my message in private...esp if I was worried about a sick child at home or something like that.

If you are in something like sales and people are using your cell to contact you - heck yeah! Answer the darn phone!
If it is your personal cell and it is a non-work related call - don't answer it. If you are smart you would either have your phone off or on vibrate in a case like this. That could easily and rightfully get you fired.

If I knew for sure it was a work related call that I was waiting for, that is the ONLY way that I'd answer my cell in front of my boss.
Incidentally, I HATE cell phones.

I've answered my phone in front of my boss, but I was on break. I don't make a habit of it, but it was an important call. I explained myself first, and then answered the phone. However, it's not something I would suggest.

I put my phone on buzz while at work; not a good idea to be taking personal calls on the celly in front of the boss.
