you are now a threat to them. this is one very basic
way to put you down. putting you down this way helps
other women with less drive or ability to excuse their
own failings. it also helps men who are threatened by
the idea of a woman who does not simper and flutter
her eyelashes to deal with the idea that being born a
female does not necessarily mean you are not a real
thinking feeling person. sad isn't it.

I don't think this makes sense, either. I mean, if you like guys, what better place to go to find HUNDREDS of guys to stare at than the Army? :-) Seriously, though, I think this stereotype was probably started by men. Some men have a problem accepting that women can do the same jobs they can. They keep holding onto this old-fashioned idea that women are teachers, nurses, and housewives, and men are construction workers, athletes, and military personnel. When a woman steps out of what they think is a normal feminine role, they assume that she is no longer feminine, and therefore, must be a lesbian. It's totally twisted and wrong, but that's how a lot of men think.
And, on a personal note, congratulations for being a woman who turns your back on those limiting stereotypes and follows your own path. I hope that you are proud of yourself, because you've made a great accomplishment.

Some people wrongly assume that any woman who is mentally and physically tough must be gay. They think this because they are uncomfortable with the fact that a woman can be self-sufficient and not needy or dependent on a man. Men don't like it because they fell emasculated, and women don't like it because they are jealous or feel inferior. I have worked security in some very tough neighborhoods and can physically take care of myself, as can many of the female cops I have worked with. Over and over, people assume that all of us are lesbians. I am not and none of the female cops I work with are either. The lesbian jokes get very old.

Allow me to first make a confession: I don't know EVERYONE. Even so, I would win a bet by maintaining that EVERYONE does not think that.
Consider the odds. All women in the Army are tough. They have to own some high measure of toughness. But I don't imagine a lesbian has to be tough to be a lesbians.
But how about Lady Golfers?!

I went back and reread my original answer and didn't like it so I'm changing it. As an officer in the U.S. Army what someone might think regarding your sexual orientation shouldn't concern you at all. You know who and what you are, and you also know that whatever someone elses personal speculation is, it had better not interfere with either their treatment of you as a fellow officer or their obedience to orders if a subordinate. I would think in fact that especially for a woman commanding men that she be viewed by subordinates as more or less gender neutral. Your sexual orientation need only be known by someone with whom you wish to have a relationship.

That has been the stereotype for as long as I can remember. Many were thought to be lesbians by the males, and even WAC females in basic at Ft McClellan
I used to go there from Ft Benning and the ones I met sure weren't!!

People don't just think that about Army women, they think that about all the branches of the service! If someone who is NOT in the Military believes that, then they are probably one of those kind of people that have convinced their-selves that women don't belong in the Armed Forces! If someone in the military thinks that way, well, that is probably a man that doesn't like taking orders or working side by side with a woman! ( Unless of course it so happens a female thinks like that....Then it's simply because she is pissed that she couldn't achieve the high rankling you have!!! )

you want what you want. Does it extremely count number what you call it or what anybody else thinks? so that you want "studs" and "butches", no enormous deal, only because you bypass for that type does no longer mean that you're perplexed or you're not any more a lesbian. it really is in uncomplicated phrases a matter of flavor. a lady is a lady no matter the way you gown her up :)

I don't think that. Why do you assume everyone thinks that? You are doing exactly the same thing you are going against - you are making assumptions based on very little facts and impressions.
