1)They feel they don't have to. They feel like the liberals will protect them, and it isn't expected of them. (too bad, IMHO)

2)They live together with so many other immigrunts (hehe) that speak their own language, and there are so many of them to do business with.

3)They don't plan on it. Most that I've met do not want to live here for the rest of their lives, they just want to make money and go back home.

it's not that they are refusing. for many immigrants, when they come to the U.S., they tend to find a community with people of their race or from their home country. Take Mexican immigrants for example. When they come over illegally, they come for two reasons, to make money and to start a better life. From the moment the arrive, they are working. Most don't have the time or money to ENROLL in an English class. They pick things up from people around them, but if they are surrounded mostly by people from their own country, they're not hearing enough english to make a difference. Also, the people that are hiring them know that these people are illegal and probably speak spanish or whatever language they need.

Having grown up in a border town, i had several friends that came from the interior United States and they could not speak any spanish. Because of this, they couldn't get jobs, because where i grew up (in the U.S.), you HAD to speak both languages.

These people are not refusing to learn the language. They know that if they could speak english, they would have an even greater advantage to others in similar situations.

That's just the crap you hear here. Ever been to Mexico city....many nationals speak English. Ever tried learning a new language? Its very difficult. I am bilingual and even though I live on border, I rarely use Spanish. My Spanish has suffered because of it. Most business and locals here will talk to you in English. And yes there is some signs, that are en espanol, but MOST are in English....The reasons some don't speak is English is due to lack of education. They probably have little or no education. Last time I checked learning to speak a new language, be it English or Spanish was a GOOD thing....go figure

Personally I don't know. Before I went to Spain a couple of years ago, I learned to Speak Spanish fluently enough to communicate with the people there. It was good because it would've been a nightmare trying to communicate. I think this should happen in America. There should be places where people learn how to speak English for little-to no cost. That way we are happy as well as the immigrants.

When you have too many people immigrating illegal or legal to any country they don't need to learn the language rules, laws or customs or assimilation in anyway. If just few million Americans were to immigrate to France we wouldn't have to assimilate and within a few short years we would change their culture.
Where Mexicans are concerned they will never assimilation especially coming to the USA as they have a history with us that has been fed with lies. So most will always resist any assimilation.

Also, English is not by a long shot the hardest language to learn. That lie went out with 5 cents candy bars. LOL

The main reason is: they speak with their family member only who speak the same language that they do.

Those who learn English are those who got the change to talk to other people., like people in their workplaces.

If I am an immigrant and I am just staying in my house all the time, I really don't have to learn English. Besides, there are bright English people who are multi-lingual... they understand many languages.

Ever thought they couldn't read or understand English? You could ask them if they wanted $1 million free but some would say no because they don't understand you. All other language isn't based on English, English is based on all other languages. They may only understand a few but the rest is like your speaking alien to them. Plus it would take a couple of years to learn because of all the rules, and the mixture of languages from Latin to Japanese to Indian words.
And to those dumb @$$ enough to think they don't want to be American or need to be shipped out-Being American means having right and freedom and the mixing of all cultures (that doesn't have to mean every aspect like language!!!). If you think they should be shipped out, then we "Americans" should too since we obviously don't want to be Americans like those immigrants who came here for the same things we have.

A piggyback on some previous answers.. We are not trying to live in their country saying, "we don't want to learn your language". We are here in the Good ol' US of A, where our primary language is English, and whoever comes here should learn how to speak English. If I move to China, I'll learn Chinese. If I move to Mexico, I'll learn Spanish. Fair enough concept.

Why some immigrants refuse...because they are trying to change our country. We are NOT trying to change THEIR native countries, so why change ours? If they don't like it..GO BACK! Very simple.

What makes you think that immigrants refuse to learn English??

Because the system decided to make things easier for them and supply things in many languages. If you want to be here then learn English. If we were to live in another country we'd have to learn that language. There should be no special favors given to anyone. Learn the LANGUAGE. As for the smart mouth above who made the comment about learning a new language. This is America. People who live her shouldn't have to if they know English. I hate pressing "1" for English. And before to start your smart mouth again, I do know more than just English. Not because I had to but because I wanted to. Anyone who comes here and doesn't know English NEEDS to learn it.

They don't refuse. Nobody likes to be an outcast and to not be able to speak for oneself.

English is the third hardest language in the world to learn next to Russian and Mandarin. It's full of rules, and contradictions to those rules, and amendments to those contradictions, etc etc. It's a very hard language to learn. You can't pick it up in one night, or one month or year.

Edit: We also have no official language in this country. English is only the de facto language.
