Okay never buy a toothbrush that is anything but soft! I could go into a long explanation, but I will spare you the lecture.
I personally highly recommend and personally use the Sonicare Elite electric toothbrush. At the office I work at, we give every patient that goes through periodontal treatment a free one. That is how good we think it is. Much healthier tissue, less plaque, less stain. It comes down to the fact that it does most of the work and has a timer. The sonic frequency helps because there is no way you could move the bristles as fast as it can. Yes it is a bit pricey, but if you value your dental health, it is the best.
Now since we cant give away these toothbrushes to every patient we also give out regular 'ol toothbrushes. Always soft or extra soft and the head of the toothbrush should never be bigger than 'compact' size. I always say smaller is better because it makes you focus on only brushing a few teeth at a time. Currently we distribute the Crest Glide Deep Clean Sensitivity Extra Soft toothbrush. I like it the most out of all the manual toothbrushes I have ever used, and that is a lot! But nothing will ever compare to my Sonicare!

The best toothbrush I have tried would be the Sonicare electric toothbrush. It not only makes your teeth and gums feel better, it also makes them look healthier. The down side is that it typically can cost close to $100. However, by the amount of plague that it removes, I would say that it should help cut down on other dental bills. Therefore, in the long run it is number one for me. They sell replacement heads at the store whenever it's time to replace them. If you choose not to go electric, the best manual toothbrushes I would recommend would be the Oral-B, Crest or Colgate brushes. They come in different kinds: soft bristles for sensitive teeth and also harder bristles.

A toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles that is angled in such a way that you can reach all surfaces of your teeth. I recommend "Butler" brand.
Make sure you get a new brush every month. The bristles wear out and fray.
