Many commonly used swear words have deviated from their original meaning in the mind the of speaker.

That is a good question...I am an Atheist and I use Gods name in swear words. I have thought about this before. I don't know why I do it, but if I had to guess I would say it is habit. I started swearing before I really knew what I believed in. I use his name in swear words now because that is what I have always done.

I always taught my boys that people who swear a lot and use God's name in vain do so because they have a lack of intelligence to find a better word to use. They have found that to be true.

for the same reason a Jew will swear, "Jesus Christ!" and the same reason a Wicca (Wiccan?) will swear, "God damn it!" because they can.
Atheists, if they accept what some Christians are saying (that they will go to hell for being atheist) they don't need to worry about eternal damnation for saying "Oh my god!" because (according to Christians) they are already condemned. They also know that most people will take offense to this, regardless of religion, which is the whole intent of swearing, anyway.

Because they do believe He exists but disobey Him and chooses to follow satan instead of God. Even satan believes in God, Satan just refused to obey God and tried to be more powerful than Him which got him kicked out of heaven. He used to be God's most beautiful angel once.

Don't mistake enculturalization for respect. After all I don't believe in any god yet my father used to use it's name when he swore.
In fact I believe that if it wasn't for swearing, no one would use that magic sky-pixie's name at all...

Because God is real and they proclaim his power even though they think it is their power. In the end , every knee will bow , every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!!!!
