By the way, these people w/rude comments should be reported...it wasn't a dumb question...there are solutions to these problems!

I personally had massive ear infections when I was a child. Absolutely no under the water activities. Put cotton in the ears when you even wash the hair! No more moisture in the ears AT ALL! Ear infections are extremely dangerous if not taken care of. Why didn't you ask your doctor when you saw him? I only have 20% hearing in my left ear from ear infections as a child. Do you want your child to hear? Take care of the situation NOW! Be active in treatment and ear drops. I'm almost deaf in my left ear and have a hard time hearing in my right. All because my parents neglected me to the extreme as a child. Both of my parents had alcohol and gambling issues. I am now fifty years old and can remember my ear doctor, Dr. Phillips, to this day. I sat in the living room one afternoon and felt something running down my neck, I put my hand up and it was all bloody! I had a massive ear infection and it hemorrhaged! I was seven years old! Don't let your child grow up like that OK? Do what any responsible parent would do and "be there and be aware". Its not fun nor funny.

QUESTION

Dear Dr. Cates,
How long after an ear infection is it safe to go into a pool?
— Wiley G. in Parker, AZ.

ANSWER
July 2, 2001

Dear Wiley G.,
As long as your child's eardrum is not perforated, it is just fine to go swimming with an ear infection. His healthcare provider will be able to see if there is a hole in the drum when she makes the diagnosis. I will add, however, that when children without perforations are allowed to dive under water, they sometimes find that the increased pressure is painful. If this is the case, you should simply limit your child's diving and being submerged according to whether or not it causes pain.

That said, sometimes the perforation of the eardrum does occur later in the course of the infection. You should suspect a hole in the eardrum if the ear seems to be leaking fluid (sometimes it will look whitish or yellowish and may be slightly tinged with blood), if there is a spot on the pillow, or if there is crusting around the ear when your child gets up in the morning. If you have any suspicions that the eardrum may be perforated, you should check with your child's provider before taking him swimming.

NO NO NO If the baby has an ear infection there is fluid already inside the ear and is very painful wait like 3 days so the antibiotic is in full action . try to keep the baby's ears from going under it will only hurt him or her.

No.

Use the medications given for treatment, which usually includes ear drops, and follow the doctor's instructions. Ear infections are common at age 2, but they can cause permanent damage. Pay attention.

I wouldn't let the 2 year old go swimming it could really make the ear infection worse. Not trying to tell you what you should and shouldn't do, cause I'd hate to have someone tell me how to parent but I really wouldn't let them go swimming, it could cause severe problems.

They should stay clear of water in the ears or cold air to the ears untill the infection is treated with antibiotics.

im a nurse and have many people ask this question. if they are swimming in a public pool and just started antibiotics less than 24 hours ago then no. they may be contagious. otherwise they may swim as long as you make sure their inner ear does not get wet. my mother always used silly puddy but standard ear plugs work.

NO way. Let your 2 year old's ear heal first. The water could make things worse. Give it a few days.

NO!! You are taking a huge risk of making the ear infection worse.
I am assuming you didn't ask the doctor while you were there because you didn't want the doctor to give you the "Are you really this stupid?" look.
