I hire my friend to dog sit. I pay her $20 per day, and she does a great job...of course, I have 6 large dogs for her to watch, and they have to be walked several times per day, so you might find a teen to do it this summer for some less.

I tell her to make herself at home, watch movies, etc.

NEVER!!! Dogs need care, & can't fend for themselves alone. I never leave my dog alone for more than 5 hours. I bring my dogs to pet hotels with me. When I need to go out of the hotel, I leave them with a kennel place I know & trust, that entertains, plays, walks & feeds them overnight. After that, I pick them up in the morning. If you have good friends or neighbors, you could also ask them for help. At least to check on the dog, so nothing happens that could be dangerous. There's always someone around. I have 2 dogs, & I make room for other dogs in my home if someone asks me to help.

I guess it depends how long you're gone each day. If you're only gone during the day it isn't that bad. But if you're going away for days at a time you should find someone who will take the dog to their home or stay at yours. Dogs don't like to be left alone. You can always board them at a kennel or at the vets. Though the best thing to do is to find someone to stay with the dog who can spend a lot of time with her. Good Luck.

Take your dog with you if you can. Have someone check on the dog and feed it about 2 times daily. Are you leaving the dog indoors or out? I hate to say this as it may sound rude, but ever consider a cat instead??? If you dont have time for the attention most dogs require maybe you shouldnt have one. Sorry!

If your pet is part of your life then plan trips that include your dog otherwise there are pet sitters that will come to the house. You could always ask a friend or family memeber. My dog goes every where with me, he is a golden retriever and I just hate to leave him home without me, he'd be so lost.

It depends on you. Remember this: when you got the dog, you got a responsibility joined, so if you´ve understood me, I´m sure you know what to do.
I have six dogs, and I´ve learned that each one of them is different of the others, like it happens with people. So I try to think about them like people, but with some differences: they never lie, and they are always going to be there for you. They live for us. Try to don´t forget this.

Bring your dog along. We've been doing it for years and it has been wonderful. More and more people are bringing pets and more and more places are accepting them. Find a website like petswelcome to help you find places to stay. One of our favorite places to go is Old Orchard Beach, Maine in the fall. There is a place right on the water that accepts pets and they are welcome on the beach.

If you can afford it I would take her to one of those "Dog babysitter places" so they can take care of it and walk it and give it attention - I don't think it's right to leave it all by itself. Or, have a friend come by and stay at your house with it. Dogs get lonely too ya know.
