2 ways I know of for most states. 1) Put it under a black light, you should see a hologram of some type. 2) If there is a barcode anywhere on the id, have a cashier at a retail store scan it. Their register should display the DL#. If it doesn't, you have a fake.

There is an ID book that shows the different types of gov't issued ids from each state. Use that if you have any kind of concern. You should be able to tell if a local ID is a fake by looking at the font that was used, the colouring in the photo, and the general appearance and feel.
If your state's ids have a magnetic strip on the back, you can buy a machine that reads that strip. It should match what is on the front of the card. If it doesn't, it is probably fake.
Follow your gut - its a great BS detector.

There is a book published maybe yearly that shows each states current and past IDs. They also mention the security features I believe. So are you asking this so you know how to make your fake ID look more real?

Depends on what state the id is from. Most states will have a hologram on it. If it is fake, it most likely will not have one. Also, you can try having the guy sign something and see if it matches the signature on the card.

there is a book you can buy with pictures of current and old id's from every state. That way you can check the id against the picture in the book.

That would usually be 21 year old that only has a college ID. Whenever I used to get them I always asked them for something else. What 21 year old doesn't have their license?

Every state / province has their own security measures, so it varies depending on where you live. For example, here in Ontario, the birthdate will always appear in the identification number of the card. The best way is to compare it to a license you know is real. Then you will be able to spot imperfections quickly.

Also, different id's have different identifying features which make them unique.
