Maybe I'm biased but...
Leadership is not needed. Effective leadership is needed. Soldiers need some wanker sitting in his/her office drinking coffee like they need a hole in their head. Unless that leader can provide true guidance and support, they are useless.
On the other hand the soldiers need to let that leader lead. I had a troop in Iraq who asked me why we didn't just "vote on all of the decisions" and why "did I get to make the decision instead of" her. I laughed in her face and told her we could try that the next mortar attack or she could follow orders and not go home in a bag.

Leadership is important because discipline must be maintained in order to coordinate an army as a team. I would suggest reading A Soldier's Story, by Gen. Omar Bradley, Crusade In Europe, by Eisenhower, and Patton:A Genius For War, by Carlo D'Este.

its extremely important. Without good leadership, things won't get done and people could die. It is also important to unit morale for there to be leadership.

The Army took 78 weeks training my son to be in a Leadership position. They want them to be able to be able to do anything someone they are leading can do. They have to be able to lead by example and that includes jump school & ranger school.
As a LT. he has been taught to lead with authority, confusion kills.
