Marijuana is a political issue, not a medical issue or a drug issue. Since this is true, you will never get any really scientific studies because the government will not allow it. After all, the government is incapable of making mistakes. In truth, marijuana has medical value, and could cheaply and easily replace various prescription drugs for pain, indigestion, eating disorders, depression and even sleep disorders. If we legalized marijuana, the drug manufacturers could not declare the wonderful dividends every year, and congressmen, senators and other politicians could not get the billions of dollars in bribes from the drug companies to keep marijuana illegal.

Cannabis Indica, located originally in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, has great heeling power and is used in ayurvedic medicine up to now. marijuana was a very common, and effective medicine, also across Europe. Popular was the ability of marijuana, it could be used for many different deceases. The plant is not capricious, and can be planted easily, the price therefor was very small. Also a part of the plant was used for production of very strong and robust materials for clothes. up to now it is used for the ropes on ships. In the beginning of 20-th century, Industry was developing rapidly, also the medicine became industry. Not being able to handle such a successful concurrence, the medical industry caused a new law, which made marijuana illegal. well i know it is not answering Ur question properly, but i hope it gives u a better idea about marijuana.

I watched a wonderful program about the medical attributes of marijuana a couple of years ago. It was done by The Nature of Things with David Suzuki and what is showed was the amazing calming properties that marijuana has for parkinson, cancer patients (so they can eat) and more. It helps to take away the pain of arthritis. I thought it was amazing and showed that this drug would be good to be legalized. We seem to be going the other way here in Canada. What a shame!

Marijuana is not illegal because of any actual effect. It was banned with absolutely no studies about it, and no evidence of its harm to society.
Its addition to the banned substances list was purely political and began because it was common for Mexican immigrants in the south to smoke it. People (being people) got all freaky about it and, mostly in an attempt to control Mexican immigrants, banned its use. Okay, actually they didn't ban it at first. They passed the marijuana tax stamp act which said you had to buy tax stamps for your marijuana. But you couldn't buy tax stamps unless you had marijuana, and it was illegal to have marijuana without a tax stamp. And, of course, the government would just refuse to issue tax stamps. So marijuana was defacto illegal.
Anyway, sorry for rambling, since the illegalization of marijuana was purely political, there's no way the government is going to get anywhere near any scientific studies of it. And since it's still a political hot potato, nobody anywhere near politics will ever touch it.

This site has a summery of the studies and arguments for medical marijuana. There are both for and against.
How about statistics:In 2001, an estimated 38,000 high school seniors in the U.S. crashed while driving under the influence of marijuana and 46,000 crashed after driving under the influence of alcohol.

It remains very difficult for pot smokers to accept the fact; one joint has the equivelancy of a pack of cigarettes. Wonder which is really worse?
