There are several reasons. First, most people are simply not smart enough to know who the canidates are, or what they stand for, so they stay home. Many no longer feel a connection to the canidates as they feel special interests now control everything. Many also feel that their vote does not count. But the real reason is just plain laziness of the American voter, who will stand in line for hours for concert tickets, show tickets or sporting events, but if there are 3 people waiting to vote, the line is simply too long.

The truth is a majority of people don't care. I have heard often how people think all politicians are nothing but crooks and liars just out for themselves. I have also heard a lot of people say that they don't vote because it doesn't effect them. I actually feel sorry for these people because they have a very bleak outlook in life. At least Cons and Libs have something they believe in.

In my work place only 50% of the people vote. You can talk up voting to the others and they will say how they'll vote next time but truth is they always come up with an excuse. I think it was Thomas Jefferson who said something very insightful. He said that it was a government of the people by the people for the people who participate.

Me personally, I get a kick out of knowing that others trust their future to me. Statistically speaking though, normally it is people over 30 who do the most voting and have the highest percentage. That is the age when people really start thinking of retirement and start realizing that who is in office effects how their retirement grows.

Why bother to vote when there is a good chance that your vote won't be counted? In some places, they don't even bother to hide the fact that they aren't counting the votes.

because they feel like their votes wont make a difference especially when you have a president who steals votes i don't know what state you live in but in Chicago they were hiding the boxes of the inner city black votes they know African Americans vote democrat 99% of the time its all a conspiracy in my neighborhood the lines of every poll hall is wrapped around the corner twice so for us to have a low vote turnout is ludicrous its a big deal our government is shady and we Americans need to open our eyes to that fact .

Lack of knowledge in politics and lack of realization of their own personal power. Educate High School students on what and how laws are created and changed... give them the information needed to help them understand how it is going to affect their future and exactly how much power they have if they participate in the ever changing country they will grow old in.. Once this is taught on a "basic" level, I think it would make it difficult to ever turn your back on it... start implementing it before they are adults. Thats one of the problems.. people that can not afford private school rely on public education, public education does not put priority in teaching this.. On the other hand, if you are wealthy, you better believe this is a BIG part of education... RESULT: Wealthy are Empowered... Poor are Powerless
thats how it all began.. and thats how it will all end too...

Just my thought on why people dont vote...

Some people just don't know enough about the candidates to feel they can make an informed decision about who to vote for. They also don't know how to find out about all the candidates.

I don't vote because I see it as choosing the lesser of 2 evils. It's easier to stay at home.

Because most people feel their voices aren't heard no matter who they vote for. Some people think all politicians are crooked, so why bother.

It's sad, really.
