I feel that one can pull of nice floor tile in small bathrooms (such as a 6'x9') if you have them set on the diagonal. Even a bigger tile (12") work well set this way. Many tile manufacturers (such as Dal-Tile) make matching wall tile for doing the tub surround and/or couter tops. Make sure they have matching bull nose and other trim pieces. Find a nice neautral earth color. For shower pan floors make sure you get porcelain tiles.
Next I would replace the lighting with recessed fixtures if you do not already have them. Recessed lighting opens the small space up and brighter lighting on lighter walls looks great.
I agree with other posts when it comes to a big mirror. I also like a couple of small pictures. Keep them as small as looks appropriate.
Try replacing the toilet with a smaller low profile one. This adds a little more cubic space and makes it look more modern.
Of course redo the swithplates. I am fond of rust color for crontrast. And to add a little something to an otherwise light/neutral room. Good luck!

Paint it a pale nautical yellow...and make it a beach theme, but things YOU like from the beach....like maybe you LOVE flip flops, so buy a whole bunch of themed stuff. You can find it anywhere. Shells like someone else said are great...lighthouses, boats...whatever YOU like about the beach. Put a small blue rug or something blue with reds, or blacks to POP in the room. You can also buy a cheap wood frame mirror, and buy some shells at hobby lobby and hot glue them all over the frame and hang that for your mirror, or even the opposite side of the room, to make the bath appear to be larger! Just make sure you paint the ceiling white or off white to draw up, making your ceiling feel tall and your room feel airy! good luck! I have a whole house beach theme, but more New Englandy!

I also have a small bathroom, I did it with the theme of Seashells. Get some Wally's, you can get pick them up at any dollar store.
They are shaped in a shell and they stick on anything. Also, they have some really nice cheap home decor for the bathroom. You might be suprised at what you can find at the dollar store that looks really exspensive.

Stay away from styles or themes... this dates your bathroom and trends come and go... opt for a simple classic look.

For a small bathroom use neutral light colour, clean lines and try to have the largest possible mirror to create the illusion of space. Add fashionable or trendy colour with your accessories. Stay away from things like Dado rails if the ceiling is low. it breaks the continuity from floor to ceiling and cuts the room in half. have as little as possible in your bathroom, it should be a sanctuary of peace and tranquility!
if the bathroom is narrow, use horizontal lines on your floor (like a timber grain or rectangular long tile to give the illusion of breadth.
Hope your remodelling is successful!

i have a friend who painted hers all ocean themed...it was really amazing...with like the bottom of the ocean having all kinds of sea creatures and then working towards the top with foam of the sea...it looked really nice...
you can even buy toilets that have sand and shell designs inside them...and u cud use a sea shell for a soap holder and so on!

dont use too many dark colors because it will make it look smaller than it already is!

Why not something clean lined and classic. Creams and tans in paint or tile. If you use tile you can add a "chair rail" inthe same colour but with a greek or roman spa type pattern, then dress it up with soft relaxing bits of colours.

I did ours in blue with metallic silver and gold stars. The metallic paint reflects the light and makes it seems bigger somehow.

That, and the biggest mirror you can put on the wall!

I'd look at the rest of the house/apartment. Don't decorate each room as its own entity. Each room has to have something to do with the other...
