My fiance and I want to get married next year, probably late spring or early summer. I want to have an outdoor wedding, but haven't lived here that long so am not sure where to have an outdoor wedding where it won't cost much, if anything. Any ideas?

You could go to Silver creek falls, its about thirty minutes from Salem. It's beautiful, it's has a large park and plenty of room. Also there is covered areas for a reception after the wedding. It's a public park and I think you only need to pay for parking. So I would check that out as a option. Also Bush park is really nice.

The first place I would look for reasonable outdoor venues are public lands like city and state parks. These places tend to be very reasonable in comparison to private properties, because they are paid for with taxpayer dollars. Check out http://www.salemconference.com/ where they have an event planner guide that includes information on wedding venues.

An example would be Deepwood (4.03 Acres - 1160 Mission SE)
" The house and gardens are open for reservation by the public through the Park and Recreation Agency (in Salem Oregon). There is a fee schedule for use of the house and another for use of the gardens. A resident caretaker is available to care for the house and to maintain the calendar schedule.

A Historic Preservation grant has been approved by the National Park Service to assist with restoration of the house. Painting and a new roof for both the house and carriage house are the main projects to be accomplished. It is a beautiful old house with tiffany stained glass windows that were brought around "The Horn" by ship, and original oak paneling. Deepwood has slowly gained more use for special meetings, weddings and receptions. The grounds are used extensively."

You also have to think about where to have a reception. The ideal would have a place were you and your guests can walk to a lodge or house on the grounds with a kitchen that can be used by a caterer. You can also just go to a restaurant nearby and have the reception there. Keeping your guest list reasonably small is going to help keep costs down. If you want a more casual event you can always do a picnic where there are grills and food brought in from friends and family.

What you are looking for is a venue that has a lodge or the ability to put up a wedding tent. When planning an outdoor event especially in a state known for bouts of rain you need to have a plan B -- some shelter that you and the guests can retreat to. Don't forget restrooms!

If you don't find anything in Salem, you should check out other city listings of parks.

Another option is to check out the wineries in the area, I am not sure how pricey they are, but it is worth looking into. Some times family farms have B&Bs that allow weddings to occur on their land.

Try a park, but make sure there is a covered area nearby that you might want to reserve as well because as any true Oregonian knows the chance of rain is always there! I know they do weddings at Silver Falls. The prices in the parks are usually pretty reasonable. You can also try some of the wineries. They will be a bit more pricey, but can offer you the option of having everything done and ready to go for you. Good luck and best wishes!

I would have an indoor wedding just in case of inclement weather.
This way you can control the lighting/atmosphere to your liking.
I noticed that a lot of couples who've had wedding disasters, had outdoor weddings. So have an indoor wedding just to be safe!
