Not gracefully heh

These days, I think the best compromise between being 'proper' and 'reasonable' is to walk in first, then step to the side and hold the door open. If you try to hold the door open while staying outside, you end up getting in the way and being much more annoying than polite.

I've had the door held open for me both ways. (1) the guy stretches his arm to hold it open while I slip through the door trying not to bump into his arm and (2) the guy walks in first and holds the door from the inside.

The latter works the best.

Walk through first and then hold the door open; you may have to squish up against the wall, or if you're lucky, there is space behind the door...

I did this alot for my dad who carried oxygen; it was hard at first, but now it's more like second nature. I try to help other people who are assisting their aging parents with this little tricks to help them. I don't expect a guy to hold open the door for me unless he's "Rico-Suave", but those types of guys scare me because they're too Suave.

You push the door in and stand to the side while still holding the door open.

he insists to push it open, scooting in front of her and pushing it with one arm while he sees her go through. Its really dumb though because no matter who you are, it makes a woman feel like your a professional and she, just a helpless 'woman;'. Personally i feel that you should open doors and just hold them for people without the fake smiles and oh thank yous. Just hold it open like you knew someone was going to go through and like it was your job. Why not just put door jambs in these stupid business doors during buisness hours so nobody would go through this inconvenience. Matter of fact just take off all the doors to businesses and never worry about the problem again.

All good answers, but I've also had this: I push the door open, he kinda uses his arm a little, but this way, he's not straining, you're not trying to get around him, and it just makes it easier on him. You're a woman, but you're not crippled. You can touch the door.

You take the door off of the hinges, let the lady walk in, then re-attach the door.

I usually walk through the door and then hold it for her.

The man should say, "please allow me", enter first, and hold the door open for the lady.
