The absolute BEST way is quite honestly COLD TURKEY. The reason is...it takes 72 hours or 3 days for all the nicotine to get out of your system and once you live through those three days then it's just mind over matter as your body's NEED for nicotine is gone. The patches, gum etc. anything with nicotine in it and the "tapering off" just prolongs the agony of nicotine withdrawal.

You have to replace that "bad habit" with a good one so be prepared BEFORE you quit....and know what you are going to do INSTEAD of smoking. Remember the average 'craving' lasts 3 minutes.

I used whatever it took to get through the first 2 weeks, sugar free suckers, licorice root (you can buy at the bulk store usually) to chew on, sugar free gum, tic tacs, and believe it or not straws the extra tough ones that come in drinking boxes (I chewed through about 7 of them and just keep cutting off the chewed end) and you can also "inhale" through the straw and then slowly exhale. Drink a ton of water, now instead of smokes and a lighter I carry bottles of water with me everywhere.

I also learned how to knit to keep my hands busy, you could do crossword puzzles, circle words, Suduko puzzles, or some kind of manly crafty thing like leather working or wood burning I suppose....

Also I downloaded a little counter from the site I posted below....I was so determined not to have to reset my counter back to zeros I wouldn't have another smoke!

Good luck, you'll need it.....but trust me when I say looking back from the other side it is SO WORTH IT!!

In three days you'll start to notice how bad smokers really smell and you'll think OMG I used to STINK like that too, in 2 weeks when you run your tongue over your teeth they won't feel like they have fuzzy slippers on them anymore....and if you can make the 3 week mark without slipping at all......I believe that the statistics for maintaining the smoke free lifestyle are about 60% for those that can make it to the 3 week mark!

GOOD LUCK!

One year, ten months, four weeks, 8 hours, 28 minutes and 34 seconds.
13947 cigarettes not smoked,
Saving $4,602.53.
Life saved: 6 weeks, 6 days, 10 hours, 15 minutes.

First of all, no method will work unless you want to stop smoking. I'm not sure there is a "best way" for everyone. There may be a "best way" for you. Let me give you an example. My last cigarette was June 15, 1983 (after 20 years of a pack and a half per day average). At the time, the big anti - smoking campaign was an advertisement with the statement: that "every cigarette is 7 minutes off of your life". I accepted that and realized that I was committing suicide - 7 minutes at a time. So I decided that, on the next day, if I wanted a cigarette, I would have to kill myself. To make a long story short, I chose not to have a cigarette then; and still haven't ("cold turkey"). I also decided that I could not even have one - because I was a non-smoker; and non-smokers do not smoke. At first, to ease the pressure on me, I promised myself no cigarettes for 15 minutes. Then I would lengthen the time to half hour; then to an hour, and so on.

I'm not saying it was easy (it wasn't), but it worked - for me.

The best way to stop smoking is not to go cold turkey. Start to decrease the amount of cigarettes you smoke a day .Until you get to none.example the first day you only smoke 9 cigarettes, then the following day you only smoke 7 cigarettes. it decreases the amount of nicotine you get a day. and also helps your body get use to no smoking at all. If you know that you will have a urge to buy a new pack . Try walking around with less amount of money so that you can only buy one pack or none at all.

I smoked from the age of 15 until 2001. At that time I was tired of smoking. Had quit for a couple of months a couple of times. Tried the patches, relied on them to stop me. They didn't! In 2001 I decided LORD if I can make it pass that first cigarette in the morning I'll have it made. That was 4 years and 6 months ago. I'm 58 years old.

Well I quit 13 mths ago....it wasnt easy but I got thru it...the 1st 72 hrs or so were the worst for me (physically)...I started with the nicotine patch and gum,but had allergic reations to both...so I then tried a herbal based patch and it worked great...it really cut down the cravings I was having and Ididnt have any reactions...they worked out to be about the same price of the nicotine replacement products....also I was a smoker for 27 yrs and had never tried to quit prior to this time...alot of it after the first few days is really more mental than physical....especially if youre using nicotine replacement stuff...it also helps if people who are close to you...even if they smoke....are supportive of what you are trying to do it will help your morale in fighting the battle of wits between you and a smoke.....good luck if you finally decide to try and quit ...

The only way I could quit was to do it cold turkey. Personally I think all the patches and gum do is prolong your habit and make you addicted to them instead. If you really want to quit then just quit. The first 48 hours are the hardest but once you get past them its not that bad. You have to change your daily routine as well. Smoking is not just about the nicotine, its the habit itself, the oral fixation or whatever you want to call it. I still chew regular gum and that helps me sometimes. You can do it if you really believe you can do it. Willpower is definitely key.

cold turkey. i did it, you feel like shite for the first week. but this is the week when your body craves nicotine the most. and then day 8 arrives and you dont want to smoke anymore. just dont eat junk, candies and buy fruits and other healthy snacks. you wont be hungry , but the desire to put something in your mouth will be so great you will begin to eat. plus at that moment, food begins to taste spectacular because your taste buds are recovering. in a month if u didnt picked up a cigarette, you know you did it. in six months you are not even thinking about it and in a year, you stop coughing blood, flem and you feel better. i did it
