You have to pay attention to them.

My last puppy, I kept him on a leash in the house and always had him by my side. When he start sniffing around, I'd take him out (and use the word "out") side. I'd walk him around...on the leash..until he stopped to do what he needed to. Then praise him like all get out.

When I wasn't home, he was crated. I made sure to come home every day at lunch time, so he wasn't going to have an accident in the crate. If I couldn't come home, I had a neighbor who would let him out.

Luckily, I worked close to home.

The only "downside" is I ended up with a dog who is happiest walking with his head in the back of my knee. He thinks that's where he belongs. On the plus side, we never had an accident in the house.

Oh..and you can't punish for going in the house. That's YOUR fault for not being there or not paying attention...not the puppy's. You have to clean it up really well...I mean REALLY well. If they smell a spot they'll think it's okay.

Don't rub their nose in it...or punish them. You're punishing them for something they don't know how to control. That's like beating a 1 year old for soiling their diapers. All dogs need positive reinforcement...you'll have a dog who loves you and isn't afraid of you. How would you like it if you were punished any time you made a mistake...especially one that's not in your control?

People speak of placing newspapers into the spot where your puppy "goes". That is in addition to taking it out frequently, but always after it has eaten.
In a veterinarian's book I read that putting the puppy into a box while in the house, then taking it out of the box to take a walk so he can void is successful. When it "goes" you must lavish praise as a reward.
The basic concept is that the puppy will not soil its own bed and wishes to please you. When you make your wishes clear in puppy terms, it will do what you want it to do and where you want it to do it.
Toilet training is an ongoing process. You must "walk" the dog often enough, always after eating, AND praise him/her. Eventually your dog will let you know by its body language that he needs to go out.
Always use positive reinforcement, never punishment.
When the dog makes a "mistake", carry it to that mistake and make it smell it.
Good luck.

First, take him out a whole lot consistantly. Every time you take him out, wait until he finally goes and then praise him EVERY time. When you catch him going in the house, pick him up and scold him. Make him watch you clean up the miss using vinegar. After you clean it up, put a drop of Tabasco sauce on your finger, and rub it on the puppy's gums. Take him immediately outside, and wait until he goes outside and praise him. It doesn't take very many times of the Tabasco sauce before they learn. Also, put you puppy in a pet taxi at night and while your gone. This will teach him to hold it. This has worked for all 4 of my dogs. GOOD LUCK!

Only scold(verbally) them when you catch them. Take them out every 2 to 3 hours......to the same patch of grass. Make potty time the last thing you do before you go to bed and the first thing you do when you wake up.

put a pad near the fireplace or something and make sure he or she learns to go there. Then move the pad to the front door to wear the puppy will be going out. Then put the pad outside and close the door. Then the puppy will scratch getting the hint that she has to go outside. Then put the pad on the grass and keep the door closed. Then remove the pad and she will be recieving the hint that OH I HAVE TO go TO THE DOOR AND WHINE TO GO PEE! do this over a month or so.... it worked for me and my puppy,Sophie/ Good Luck!

Research crate training and of couse use positive reinforcement. Never rub the dogs face in it or beat it for having an accident.
You also may want to hook it's leash up to you anytime that you are in the house if you want to let it out of its crate.
