There are several potential answers to your question. First, taking antidepressants doesn't mean you will never feel depressed. Depression is part of a normal, healthy emotional life and everyone will feel that way from time to time. Their intent is to lessen the severe, disabling depression and allow the individual to function more normally.
Another potential answer is that the particular antidepressant is not a good match for the individual. Everyone's chemical make-up is unique, and what works for one person may not for another. There are several different antidepressants on the market that work in different ways and a different one may need to be tried. Or the dosage may need to be adjusted. One thing to be aware of is that antidepressants often take several weeks before you start seeing a difference. They have to be taken regularly and as prescribed in order to work.
Another thing to consider is the root of the depression. Antidepressants work great if the depression is caused by a chemical imbalance. But if a person has what's called "situational depression", meaning they're depressed over events in their lives, then the depression won't go away entirely until those events are dealt with, which most likely will require psychotherapy.
So don't give up hope of getting out of depression just because the pills don't work magically. You (and your friend) need to communicate clearly and honestly with your doctor/therapist so they can best help you.

It takes a few weeks to start noticing a difference when you go on medications. There are different type of anti-depressants that work on different chemicals in your brain. What you're on may not be correcting the chemicals it needs to correct. You may be getting too much of one chemical and not enough of another. It is also highly recommended that one not only take medication, but see a psychologist as well. This way you are fixing the problem physiologically as well as psychologically and learning coping mechanisms. Hope this helps.

If you are just getting on them it will take time to get into your system. If you have been on them for quite a while then maybe they need to be adjusted. I have been on antidepressants for quite a few years and have had to have periodic adjustments. Antidepressants dont mean that you never get sad just that you dont get sad so often, at least thats the way it is in my case.

Well, how long have you been on them? It takes weeks or even months sometimes before you'll notice a difference. They aren't a quick fix, they are actually fixing a chemical imbalance.
