The dvd players can read any video files that you have burnt using software for DVD video burning. Try Intervideo WinDVD Creator. The format it creates is .vob, you can also add menus, pictures etc. These softwares need to be purchased, they are not free.

I believe most DVD players use DVD-R format. I'm assuming that DVD-RW is more compatible than DVD+RW.
