I have to go to a picnic and bring a dish to pass. I was assigned to bring a "Main Dish" but I don't know what that is unless I bring hotdogs or hamburgers and I don't know if they will have a grill available also there was another category for salads and desserts so I can't bring any of those either. If you have an idea a recipe with it would really help.

If you want to be a hit plan on BBQ Beef sandwiches. The link below makes about 20 sandwiches. if your going to make it. Make it at home and put it in a deep baking tray for easy transporting heating if available at Picnic and disposal once cleaned out. I'd do an easy thing like finding a BBQ place in town that can make a tray for you of beef and pork if possible they can tell serving size of meat if you give them an about count of people to attend. Good Luck

COLD FRIED CHICKEN IS MY FAVE
but what about some sandwiches---I've seen Rache Ray made big stuffed sandwiches for tailgate parties. Get a big crusty loaf of bread and cut the top off and scoopu out the middle---layer in your meats and cheese (ie muffalatta----ham, modella, genoa salami, provlone cheese and a olive salad )and veggies put the top back on wrap it up----then you can slice it at the picnic-----you could do sliced chicken, baby spinach, roasted red peppers, maybe pesto mayo? experiment with different meat and cheese, veggies, different breads.

Chicken that is pre-cooked (baked, broiled, or fried) is good for picnics. It is a dish that is good cold.
Another option would be a deli tray with a variety of cold cuts and cheeses so the guests could make their own sandwiches. You could also supply the condiments (mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise) but make sure that mayonnaise products stay cold.

Sandwiches. That's a good main dish for a picnic.

Not chicken, everyone brings chicken, and not sandwiches, unless they are yummy foot long deli type.

We always have someone bring Ceviche (made with cooked shrimp, fake crab meat and cooked white fish) on ice served with tostadas. Or "Patti LaBelle's" "Over the Rainbow" Mac 'n cheese. Both dishes are always a hit, with no leftovers.

There are a lot of good ideas...just keep in mind that it will be warm (hot) on a picnic, so you probably should stay away from anything with mayo! Or any other condiment that might spoil in the heat.

Go to a deli and buy a super size sub or more if needed, that can be sliced into 3 or 4 inch sandwiches. Or you can make your own using Italian or French bread. Don't forget the Italian dressing.

You could take some chicken that you cooked at home. That way if there isn't a grill available, its alright because chicken is good served either hot or cold. Another idea is a big casserole or pot pie.
