More or less it is the body's way of doing a systems check. There are several times a night when a typical man will have an erection while he's asleep. This assures that the sexual function continues to work regardless of whether the individual is having regular intercourse or not.

By the way, its fun to wake up with those. Since those erections are centrally mediated...e.g. comes from a signal in the brain -they don't go away that easily, even after ejaculation...which means you can have extraordinary staying power.

Jade Monkey is misinformed. Blood pressure has nothing to do with achieving an erection - at least in this context. If it did there would be many more circumstances where a spontaneous erection just happens...standing on your head, getting up from a chair, sprinting down the field, etc. An erection happens due to a complex constellation of events that essentially crimp off the veins and keep the arteries pumping, thus achieving turgidity.

"Morning wood". Ummm. What is that? Do you mean that their penis' are hard? Usually it means that they have to empty their bladders.

Sexually it means they are turned on by a women that they may or may not desire.

I hope this is tasteful. It is a good question especially if you are a young girl needing information. A lot like asking your mom something but not knowing if they will give you the right answer.

I don't really know. It's possible that it's because you sleep on your junk, so it gets hard.
Another possibility is that a guy is dreaming about something nice.
I wouldn't say that I always wake up with one, but it's pretty common.
The most interesting thing is that often "Morning Wood" is the hardest wood of all. It's kinda wasted in a way!

'morning wood' or 'morning glory' is a result of the change in plood pressure associated with waking up. when one is asleep the relaxation naturally brings the general blood pressure down and relaxes muscles and other tissues that rely on blood to function ie the penis. one woken, or nearly woken, however the blood pressure to the tissues is raised and an erection forms.

It's a condition caused by a full bladder, constricting the flow of blood out of the penis. It's not a sexual thing...it's just a sign that a guy needs to get up and go to the bathroom. As soon as he begins to urinate, the erection relaxes, because blood is able to flow normally again.
