Unfortunately there is know way around hurting his feelings if you want to be direct. You just have to tell him that you don't have those kind of feelings for him. Also in regards to the BF, tell him that if he truly cares for you he will attempt to get to know him or at the very least not trash talk him in front of you...
Also is it possible you are encouraging him? do you always answer when he calls? maybe flirt back a little? Text him back right away? If so then stop you are just leading him on.

I think instead of trying to get him to back off...you should ask him why he doesnt like your b/f...because their is probably some substance in what he is saying...because usually guys are right about other guys...so if your friend is saying that you b/f is a jerk, you should probably listen to him, or atleast be more observent...because I know that when my girl best friend that I liked started going out with a guy that I thought was an asshole..she ended up getting hurt becaue I told her he was an asshole and she didnt listen

you want to be ruthless in the different case hes under no circumstances ever gonna get the message!!! commence with ignoring him, replace your variety, in case you be conscious him clean him!!
