Everyone that says it takes money to pay for the materials to make a book is stupid. After a week you have made enough money to pay for a ton of materials. The fact of the matter is a bible probably only cost about a buck to make. They sell them for way more because they want to make money off of faith, just like televangelist charge heck of money to listen to "the word" and christian musicans charge a bunch for their concerts and CDs it is not about God here it is about green.

Actually, there are dozens of Bible Societies who will give a free Bible to anyone who asks.
As far as the original question goes, it does cost money to print and distribute Bibles, just like any other literary work. The modern translations charge fees because they had to pay staff to study and interpret the ancient Hebrew and Greek texts and translate them into modern English. When the works are finished, the companies naturally apply for and receive a copyright.
The major exception to the copyright is the King James Bible, which allows anyone to freely copy and distribute the text. Even so, it still does cost to produce them.
Nevertheless, anyone who truly wants one, can find one for free.

There are a lot of organizations working really hard on translating, checking, binding, etc... Bibles. It would be nice if they could just give one free to everyone in the world, but realisticly they cost money to make, so they have to charge money when you want one or they can't continue making them.

Cause the Bible is big business. Else, the makers of bibles would either give them away or only charge what it cost to make them, rather than trying to make a profit on them.

Several churces give them away. They are also free from The Gideons Society and they put them in hotel rooms. They are free to take.
Stores charge for them because they have to puy for them from the printing company. The printing company has to charge the stores for them because it costs money to buy all that paper, ink and machinery to make them.

People have to live, you know. There was labor put into it. But in some countries it's handed out free to the poor.

Because it takes money to manufacture books. Book sellers still need to make a profit in our money-minded world.
