The cookbook is a 1918 Home Comfort Range cookbook. I did a yahoo search and could not find anything.

A Pippin is a tart, green apple -- along the lines of a Granny Smith, but a tad firmer and tarter. I prefer to make my apple pies, tartes, streudels from this variety.
