Eliyah (the English is written Elijah) is pronounced El ee YAH with the emphasis on the last syllable. The Hebrew name Eliyah means "God is Jehovah."
Aliyah (pronounced ah lee YAH with the emphasis on the last syllable) is Hebrew meaning "go up".
Some of the history of aliyah is provided by the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews and is recorded as follows:
538 BCE King Cyrus of Persia issues an edict to Jewish exiles from the Babylonian captivity, allowing the to "go up" (aliyah) to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple (2 Chronicles 36:23; Ezra 1:1-3
The First Aliyah in the common era (CE) was between 1882-1903. About 35,000 Jews come to Israel, mostly from Eastern Europe, a smaller number come from Yemen.
1904-1914 The Second Aliyah. Some 40,000 Jews emigrate to Israel from Russia following terrible pogroms, or organized massacres, against Russian Jews.
1919-1923 The Third Aliyah. Another 40,000 Jews arrive in Israel, mostly from Eastern Europe.
1924-1929 The Fourth Aliyah. A total of 82,000 Jews come to Israel, many fleeing strong anti-Semitism in Poland and Hungary.
1929-1939 The Fifth Aliyah. The rise of Nazism leads to a wave of Jewish emigration to Israel that totals 250,000 people. The majority, 174,000, arrived between 1933-36.
1933-1948 Illegal immigration, called Aliyah Bet (secondary emigration), takes place during this period as the British put severe quotas on legal emigration and many Jews want to flee the threat of Nazism during World War II (1939-1945).
May 14, 1948 The modern State of Israel is born.
For more information on the amazing story of Israel's ingathering to the Holy Land in fulfillment of Bible prophecy and how you can play a part in making ALIYAH possible for Jews in many countries to return to their ancient homeland, please visit The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (www.ifcj.org) or John Hagee Ministries (www.jhm.org).
