I have no problem with some slang because that's just the way many people speak. As long as it's not "ghetto" talk and understandable, it's fine. Because writers use it I let it slide.

I refuse to even try to hold a conversation with someone that SMSes everything.

Slang comes about because a language is not dead, it is constantly evolving. People like to get things out quick and talk fast. The faster you talk the more common it is to meld words together. Television media has an influence on this because kids pick up speech patterns by those they are around. If a parent talks poorly and the shows they listen to do not enunciate, they won't either.
Each and every country has slang. It's rude, it's informal, but it's always a lot easier to say then the full word. In Japan, it's very common (and very obnoxious for foreigners who are still struggling with the original words, let alone the shortened informal versions).

It is a cultural thing. I don't let it bother me, personally. The only time I have a problem with it is when someone who uses an expression I'm not familiar with and won't extend the courtesy of an explanation when I ask for clarification. That is just plain rude!

Using sms in emails is a bad habit that evolves from too much IM'ing. If fact, I catch myself doing it once in a while & have to make a conscious effort to self-correct. I don't think TV has anything to do with it at all but Instant Messaging does.

No! I don't mind at all. What I do hate is when people speak grammatically incorrect as a form of intelligent conversation.

Slang did not begin with the invention of television. It's a way cultures have distinguished themselves from the dawn of time and further cultivated communication.

Also, abbreviated writing in e-mails and IM or text messages is also a form of advanced communication with the ever growth of technology!! It's all good!!

Advice people should feel free to use is the new advancement called SPELL CHECK!!! Use it!! Own it!! Love it!!! USE IT!!!

:o)

I'm ok with mild slang - the one you noted above.
But when people begin to speak hard slang - like those "albanic russian words" - I'm going crazy... I just hate it and the one who invented that damn thing...
