Here's how you do it.
Drink lots and lots of water everyday, morning noon and night. Instead of walking 8 miles do speed intervals, you have to trick your heart into ramping up blood flow then slowing back down, ramping back up again and slowing down. This will help with the hurting of the sides because you are easing into a long-distance run rather than shocking you body in essence. It is very normal for your sides to hurt, it means you have to fight through the pain though, if you lose the weight, sooner then later they will stop hurting.
Since you are 16 yrs old you burn about 2100-2200 calories a day. To lose a pound of fat you have to burn about 3500 calories. From here on out it is nothing but a numbers game. Consume only about 1500 calories per day and you will be losing about 1-2 pounds a week with daily exercise. Remember the fat content on labels isn't the concern, the number of calories is.
Always eat breakfast and never eat after 9:00pm. If you don't eat in the morning you are guaranteed to overeat at night.

What time of day do you usually go walking?
If I were you, I'd definitely do it first thing in the morning. (Okay, second thing in the morning -- you're allowed to go to the bathroom first!)
Doing cardio exercise first thing in the morning is the best time to burn fat and lose weight -- your body is in its best fat-burning mode at that time of day.
Your side hurts when you run because you're getting cramps in the muscles in your sides. Do exercises to strengthen those a bit -- lat pulldowns and sitting back rows can help.
Also, eat a few (2 or 3) bananas every day. They're rich in potassium, which help us avoid cramps and pulled muscles when exercising.

you should eat little meals all day, lots of fresh fruit and vegis, water and try to cut out red meat and too much dairy. I find walking after I eat to help. Make sure you eat breakfast because you metabolism slows down when you are sleeping and won't kick in again until you eat. Try not to eat before 8 at night. Eat lots of soup and cereal dry fruit is good too, make your own smoothies. I hear baby food is a good diet food too. Stay away from fried foods, dairy, soda and baked goods and you should do fine. GOod luck. Oh and cranberries are really good for speeding up metabolizm too.

Eat a lowfat, high fiber diet for 3 days, then on the 4th eat whatever you want - pizza, ice cream, etc. then 3 more days of lowfat, high fiber and another day of fun food. Keep up the exercise - (wish I could walk 2 miles a day) - that is fabulous.
