i agree with the other posts, dogs find out info on each other this way. As far as deteriants a simple no while pulling the dog back by his leash, as all dogs sniff each other i doubt this will break the habit... but will at least teach him to quite sniffing/ and stop for that individual situation. Pugs having flat faces do not have as many smell receptors as average long muzzled dogs, of course they can not smell as well as other breeds, pugs were not bred to be tracking animals. lol. As reply to other post smacking a pug on its nose would require smacking its whole face, not a recommended dog training method. Dogs can understand more of the human language if properly trained to understand commands than we will ever learn about what differant "sounds" they make. This i think makes them smarter than us at times. lol
A n a l Sacs are located just inside the rectum to either side of the anus. Males and females both have them. They extrude a wretched-smelling liquid with each bowel movement the dog has and are added into the feces. It's what makes a dog's butt so interesting to smell by other dogs (and really weird people :-) as well as their feces. It's a nice little signature odor that personalizes each dog and its droppings. As long as the stool is firm enough to press against the sacs on the way out, they will empty normally. Sometimes they get infected or impacted if the stool is too loose for a long enough period or there is a physical problem with the sacs. Ever scare your dog on accident (or on purpose .... I don't know) and get that foul-smelling odor filling the air? That's from the anal sacs that have emptied by physical pressure from the dog contracting its muscles suddenly. It doesn't wash off and lingers in the air for what seems like days. Thank your lucky stars if you don't experience this regularly (it's very different than gas - hey you asked!).

Dogs not only sniff other dogs butts. But, also their own gets a check as the clean it.

Dog butts are like journals for dogs. We could translate that to our TV, periodicals, newspapers, Internet etc. A good sniff at a dogs butt will inform if the other had something good to eat (maybe it would be worth hanging out with the other dog), how well things get digested (is the other dog healthy, or maybe dangerously unhealthy), is the other dog an interesting specimen of the opposite gender (or when might things get more interesting), and many more things that somehow makes life more informed and interesting to a dog.

The real scary thing to keep in mind is that a dog's sense of smell is many times better than ours. So, what we think smells bad should smell worse for a dog.

Clearly they must experience the whole situation different than we do, or they would stop after trying just ONCE.

Just because we can learn a lot from animal behavior doesn't mean we have to do as they do. I would rather go on the Internet than smell a dogs butt, any day. :)

True Story!
A loooong time ago all the dogs in the world went to a formal party. They had to check their butts at the door. All was going well until somebody shouted "FIRE". All the dogs ran for the door and just grabbed a butt. Until this day, they sniff each other to see if they can find their Real Butt..

LOL

Dogs have pheromone glands in that region that secrete a combination of hormones that are unique to that dog. Therefore, they sniff one another's butts as a way of identifying the other.

Identification is done through scent. I pity the dog who sniffs the butt of a dog with chronic farts.

Dogs sniff each each other to get to know one another.

It is their way of saying hi to each other....unlike humans(us) we talk but dogs dont usually talk they have facial expressions so part of sniffing butts is just saying hi.

Its an identification thing. Dogs can tell where each other has been, what they have been eating, if they are sick, and recognize familiar dog scents from sniffing.
