you don't have to change your name to be adopted.

Sounds like a legal question. But if the adoption goes through, and you have a voice in the matter, then a wise step-dad would encourage you to keep a name that you value so much, and not take it personal. If the choice is up to you, and he is hurt or angry because of it, you have to decide what price you will pay in terms of keeping peace in the family. The best of all worlds is that he respect your wishes, and you respect his place in the home. This could get tricky, so I hope it works out for all of you.

You can be adopted without changing your last name. Of course at some point in your life you may get married and change your last name anyway so is it really that big of a deal to change your last name simply in appreciation for your step dad caring enough to want to adopt you?

You don't necessarily have to change your name if you are adopted. You can be legally adopted and still keep your same last name. Or you could have it changed legally but still use your old name. I know people who did that. Talk to your mom and stepdad about what you want.
Also, whether or not you change your name will not affect who you live with if something happens to your mother. If you get adopted by your stepfather and something happens to your mother, you'll probably live with your stepfather.
Good luck!

If you love your mom, and want to be adopted..change it...I understand it's your real name but...it's only a name...i mean ppl would still call u by your first name....it's like people giving u nick names

I went through the same EXACT thing... My step dad adopted me and I hyphenated my last name. So I used my real lastname and my adopted last name. You can always choose to get adopted and keep your name the way it is. I didn't want to have to go live with my biological dad either.

well i think you can take his name and still keep yours. say your name was sarah renee bliss and the guy that is adopting you his last name is morgantraw, then you can hyphenate it i think. so it would be sarah renee bliss-morgantraw, that should be ok, i would ask your mother or something and express your feelings about it and see what she can do about it! good luck! but realy if this does not work then i would still change it , i mean especialy if you dont want to ever live with your real dad.

I am assuming that you have a good relationship with your Stepdad and that your biological father doesn't object to you being adpted (It would require his approval). Now with that being said you can express your opposition to the adoption or you can proceed and at a later date, as an adult, you can petition the court to change your name and you would still be your step dad's legal child. Hope this helps.

Don't change your name if you don't want to. If something happens to your Mom, maybe you could live with another relative, not the Step Dad.
Hope things go ok for you,

keep the name you want (if your old enough to decide) or use a hyphen. You shouldn't have to go live with your real dad>>>there are wills and legal things to stop that if need be
