Well bred bulldogs can cost a thousand dollars or more. And you don't want one from a cheap breeder - they don't care about the health of the dog which means what you save in breeder fees, you will probably make up for in vet bills.
Make sure you research the dog and don't get one simply because you think they are cute. They are prone to skin, nasal, and eye problems that can be very expensive to fix. They also snore loudly (to the point it may keep you up at night), can smell funny, and can be very stubborn.
Look at your local pet rescue for a variety of dogs. If you simply want companionship, get a mutt of some sort. If you need a purebred, remember that something like 40% of the dogs that come into shelters are purebred.
If you decide to use a breeder, make sure you do your homework so that you get a quality dog and don't support those who breed only for profit. With 2-5 million unwanted pets killed every year, there's no need to support breeders who have bad breeding practices.
Below I've linked to a generael rescue site, the bulldog rescue page, information on the breed, things you should know about buying a dog, a page with tips on being a responsible owner, and a site with tips on how to find a good breeder.

I am the owner of an English Bulldog and I must tell you it is true that you do get what you pay for. Bullies can run anywhere between $1500 to $4000 - I would recommend though if you do not mind looking into a bulldog rescue first. I adopted my dog (paid $700) at 2 1/2 years old and neutered.
I must tell you Bullies are a very difficult breed. They have many problems and it doesn't really matter where or ow much you paid for the dog. Just less extensive problems the better the breeder. They have allergies EVERY YEAR just like humans. Sensitive stomachs, itchy dry skin, phobias, ocd's and serious BREATHING ISSUES! My bullie is great but he has issues.
They do not clean themselves so you have to do the cleaning for them. Don't think that you can go to work in 80 degree weather and not leave the a/c on - You'll come home to a dead dog. Winter is the same - they cannot take extremes. They drool and they shed (LOTS) Expect to go to the vet a few times a year - We have to have ours sedated for nail trimmings.
I do not want to discourage you from purchasing a bullie but if you do not have the time love or patience for this type of dog then get a lab or shepard. These dogs require tons of attention and tons of patience.
Don't expect 15 years out of this dog either even though it can happen. 10 years is the life expectancy.
Good luck and hope that if you do get a bullie that you will provide it lots of love and attention that they deserve.

Well, i own one and they are very expensive (like $1000-$2500) but they are worth every penny. I love my lily. She's the best dog in the world. Or you can go to www.thebca.org and go to available rescue bulldogs, you will find them in various parts of the country and they don't cost as much, but some have health and behavioral problems.

It all depends on where you live, what breeder you go to, etc
Although an English Bulldog may cost you a lot in the long run. They have a lot of genetic problems -- skin, breathing, back, hips, legs, etc
Please really research this breed if you intend to buy one -- they do require a lot of care on your part.

Very unattractive animal.
They are way too much money.
Get a goldfish.
When you tire of the fish - simply flush.
